    • March 30, 2023

A 66-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the apparent homicide of her elderly mother in Buena Park on Tuesday, police said.

Maria Hernandez, 95, was found dead with “visible traumatic injuries” after authorities responded to a medical aid call in an apartment complex at 7551 Orangethorpe Avenue around 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the Buena Park Police Department.

Mercedes Camarena, 66, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder after authorities located evidence of a homicide, the release said. It wasn’t immediately clear who made the call to 911 or who the apartment belonged to.

As of Wednesday evening, Camarena remained in custody at the Orange County Jail, according to jail records. Bail is set at $1 million.

Camarena is due in court Thursday.
