San Juan Hills baseball tops El Toro to regain upper hand in league race
    • April 16, 2026

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The race for the Sea View League championship has been a back-and-forth one between the El Toro and San Juan Hills baseball teams.

San Juan Hills got the upper hand Wednesday with a walk-off win, 4-3, over El Toro at San Juan Hills High.

The teams have now split the first two games of the three-game league series. El Toro (10-9-1, 4-4) won the first game Tuesday.

“It was good for us to bounce back after that,” San Juan Hills coach Brett Levier said. “We’ve outhit them these two games but they scored more runs than us yesterday because they executed and got big hits with guys on base. We need to keep doing that too.”

Noah Wisneski led off the seventh inning with a walk for the Stallions (14-9, 5-3) and advanced to second on a single by Derrick Robertson. Brodie Corpuz bunted for a single to load the bases and Garrett Gandolfo hit a game-winning sacrifice fly.

“I was just thinking to myself if I get a deep fly ball we could get a run across,” Gandolfo said. “We had no outs so I knew I would get it or the guys behind me would get it.”

San Juan Hills got a stellar performance from Alex Landie out of the bullpen. Landie pitched 2⅔ scoreless innings, stranded the bases loaded in the sixth inning and a runner on third in the seventh inning to keep the score tied.

“He’s been awesome for us,” Levier said. “He’s shown time and time again that he’s been able to handle those pressure situations and make big pitches when we need it.”

El Toro struck in the first inning when Nathan Broesamle hit a solo home run to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Broesamle also homered in Tuesday’s game and has four homers this season.

The Stallions opted to not challenge Broesamle with runners on base for the remainder of the game, pitching around him once and intentionally walking him another time.

“You know you’ve done a good job as a hitter with what you do with mistakes by the pitcher,” Levier said. “We’ve made a couple mistakes to him and he’s hammering balls. He had the one yesterday and the ball he hit today was really hard.”

San Juan Hills tied the game in the first inning and added two runs in the second inning. Clay Riggs drove in a run with a single in the first inning to give him 18 RBIs this season.

Wisneski doubled in the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Robertson. Corpuz drove in a run with a double in the ensuing at-bat to extend San Juan Hills’ lead to 3-1.

El Toro tied the game in the fifth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles by Jonthan Gould and Brayden Penrod.

Max Smith pitched a complete game for El Toro and didn’t allow a runner to reach second base from the third inning to the seventh.

Cameron Morrissey started the game for the Stallions and had four strikeouts in 4⅓ innings.

The two teams will finish the series Friday at El Toro High.

San Juan Hills most recently won the Sea View League in 2024. El Toro most recently won a league championship in 2018 when it won the South Coast League title.
