Sunny Hills boys volleyball defeats Northwood to reach Division 4 semifinals
    • May 7, 2026

FULLERTON — The Sunny Hills boys volleyball team trailed for the majority of the first set in its CIF-SS Division 4 quarterfinal against Northwood on Wednesday night at Sunny Hills High School.

Sunny Hills rallied late to win the set.

The comeback seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match, as the Lancers went on to a 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-16 victory over the Timberwolves.

The Lancers (19-14) will play Crossroads of Santa Monica in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday at Sunny Hills High. The Roadrunners defeated San Marino in four sets in their quarterfinal Wednesday.

The Lancers are in the semifinals for the first time since 2022, when they won the Division 5 championship.

“We really focus on good ball control and what we can control on our side,” Sunny Hills coach Albert Soliguen said. “And just having positive body language and talking to each other and staying connected. And I think having that connection and practicing it really translated in that first set.”

Sunny Hills was never far behind in the first set and tied the score at 11-11 after trailing early.

Then the Timberwolves (18-16) took the lead back and were ahead 21-18 when the Lancers closed the set with a 7-1 run.

The late rally began with a kill from Christian Lee.

Then a block from Alex King, another block from King and Jadyn Salud, a pair of aces from Jake Sueki and a block from Salud and Owen Filadelfia for the final point of the set.

Sunny Hills’ strategy was to set Lee as often as possible and Lee responded with a game-high 22 kills.

Lee scored from the right and left side and from the back row.

“I think in the first set, our morale was down,” Lee said. “After the first set, that is when my energy started kicking in and then I just held up the team more.”

The Timberwolves got back in the match with a strong third set.

Abhi Shrivastava led the Timberwolves with five kills in the set and Emerson Cheng contributed with two kills and two blocks.

The fourth set was close until a pair of kills from Lee, a block from Lyle Pickavance and a kill from Parker Mesnik lifted the Lancers to an 11-7 lead.

Owen Filadelfia’s five kills and service ace helped the Lancers pull away with a 22-14 lead.

Lee got the final kill of the set.

“I’m super excited,” said Lee about advancing to the semifinals. “I’m super stoked.”
