Angels come from behind to beat Cubs
    • February 26, 2026

THE GAME: The Angels rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs, 5-4, on Thursday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander José Soriano gave up three runs on five hits in three innings. Soriano finished with a perfect third. Soriano hit 100 mph four times. He only reached that threshold eight times all of last season. “It means a lot because I’m healthy and can throw harder without trying to throw hard, and that’s a good thing,” Soriano said. “I’m not focusing on that right now, just trying to focus throw strike and I think I was pounding the zone.” Although Soriano walked a batter and hit a batter, he threw 40 strikes among his 59 pitches. … Right-hander Chase Silseth pitched a perfect inning, with two strikeouts. Silseth had allowed six runs in his first outing of the spring. … Left-hander Sam Aldegheri gave up one run in three innings, with three strikeouts. Aldegheri is prepping to pitch for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. … Left-hander Mitch Farris worked two scoreless innings to finish the game. Farris averaged 93 mph with his fastball, which was up from 90 mph last season.

HITTING REPORT: Zach Neto and Mike Trout had back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning, producing the Angels’ first run of the game. Trout’s double was off the batters’ eye in center field. Neto is 4 for 10 with three doubles this spring. Trout is 2 for 6 this spring. … Gustavo Campero pulled a ground ball just inside the first-base line, for a two-run triple. Kyren Paris and Chris Taylor followed with consecutive run-scoring hits, to give the Angels a four-run inning and a 5-4 lead. “They’ve been having great at-bats,” Manager Kurt Suzuki said. “Sometimes you find holes; sometimes you don’t. But it was nice to string some hits together, some extra-base hits together, and kind of get the line moving. It was fun.” … Yoán Moncada struck out twice and walked. He’s now 0 for 8 with six strikeouts this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: Trout lost a fly ball in the sun, allowing it to drop for a double. Trout was playing left field, a position he hasn’t played in the regular season since 2013. He is going to get work at all three outfield positions this spring, although his goal is to return to center field. … Taylor, who followed Trout in left field, made a nice sliding catch.

UP NEXT: Angels (LHP Brent Suter) at Reds (RHP Rhett Lowder), Friday, 12:05 p.m. PT, at Goodyear Ballpark
