Rams playing waiting game with backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo
    • April 21, 2026

As the Rams prepare for the NFL draft this weekend, they are still waiting to learn about the future of their backup quarterback decision.

On Monday, it was reported that Jimmy Garoppolo is considering retirement after 13 seasons, including the last two with the Rams as Matthew Stafford’s backup. Speaking on Tuesday, Rams head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead confirmed they are giving Garoppolo time as he considers his options.

“Jimmy’s always been priority number one for the backup. So we’re letting him go through his process,” Snead said during a joint Zoom press conference. “We’ve had good dialogue, no timeline. Wanted to be able to give him his time. He knows that he’s a really important part of what we want to do.”

Garoppolo, 34, has served in an important role even as a reserve. He was instrumental in preparing the offense for the regular season last year when he stepped up with the starters as Stafford navigated an aggravated disk in his back. And his work as the scout team quarterback in practices has prepared the defense each week for game day.

As the Rams have waited for Garoppolo, their preferred alternative – veteran Kirk Cousins – signed a free agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. There are other veterans available on the free agent market, and the Rams do have fourth-year QB Stetson Bennett, whom McVay reemphasized his confidence in on Tuesday.

But the plan is for the organization to continue to have patience as they allow Garoppolo the time he needs to make his decision.

“You leave the door open. I don’t think you want to press,” McVay said. “I think what you don’t want to do is ever force a guy to play if in his mind he’s ready to move on, but you don’t want to minimize that, ‘Hey, if you do decide you want to play, let’s make sure it’s here with us.’”
