WALNUT — Andrew Maksymowski touched the wall, looked up at the timing board and launched himself backward in his lane for a series of splashes.

The Northwood swimmer had multiple reasons to celebrate at the Spring High School Meet of Champions at Mt. SAC on Saturday night.

Maksymowski split his anchor leg in the 400-yard freestyle relay in an eye-popping 43.44 seconds to help the Timberwolves win in 3 minutes, 00.97 seconds.

In posting his second 43-second anchor in three weeks, the USC commit capped a record-setting meet with a telling display of emotion. He’s enjoying his senior season with teammates and hungry for more.

“I like uplifting the mood,” Maksymowski said. “We swim better when we’re happy and excited. This meet has always been really exciting.”

“You can celebrate a win but the big goals you’re always chasing,” he added.

Rising sophomore Michael Wang led off Northwood’s 400 free with his own sizzling leg. He clocked a 44.45 that nearly matched his 44.40 at the Loyola Invite.

Sophomore Liam Von Schonfeldt followed with a 47.20 split before freshman Max Chen unleashed a lifetime-best 45.88 to set the stage for Maksymowski.

“They got the dog in them,” Maksymowski said of Von Schonfeldt and Chen. “I’m hope next next year (Wang) can take over my spot.”

Maksymowski won the 200 free in a meet-record and lifetime-best 1:34.71. He joined OC record holder Grant Shoults (1:33.26) and Olympian Tom Shields (1:33.63) as the only county swimmers to ever break 1:35 in the 200 free.

    Maksymowski won the 100 free in a meet-record 44.22.

Northwood, the reigning state champion, scored 532 points to finish third in the team competition behind De La Salle (583) and Bellarmine (534.5).

Woodbridge’s girls swept the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays to finish third in the team competition. The Warriors scored 352 points to finish behind Carondelet (511) and Coronado (358).

Woodbridge employed Tanja Amizic on all three relays.

“We feel great,” she said of the relay sweep. “We have a really good team.”

In the 400 free, Amizic led off with a 50.92 and teamed with Peyton Ferrero (53.25), Holly Fishburn (52.80) and anchor Isabelle Parker (50.67) to clock a county-leading 3:27.64.
