City of Orange is seeking community input on Grijalva Park improvements
    • April 6, 2026

Orange city leaders are looking for feedback from residents on what to focus on for sprucing up Grijalva Park.

The site of a former landfill, Grijalva has become one of the city’s largest parks and is known for its sports facilities.

Acquired by the city in 1999, Grijalva has grown to include 42-acres of open space, trails, playgrounds and a sports center, which includes basketball and pickleball courts.

The city is continuing to develop the park site in phases and recently hosted a Grijalva Park Master Plan community meeting, seeking input on its ongoing effort of transforming the park into “a model of recreational excellence, where diverse amenities, active and passive recreation opportunities, and environmentally responsible design come together to enrich daily life for residents and visitors.”

New amenities being asked about include more trails and sports courts, a community arts theater, a senior center and even a BMX pump track, which residents can weigh in on via a community survey. Find the survey at cityoforange.org.

The park is named for Juan Pablo Grijalva, a Spanish soldier and explorer who came to California with the Spanish army in 1776. In 1801, Grijalva petitioned for 60,000 acres of land from the Spanish government — land that now encompasses Anaheim Hills, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Santa Ana, Tustin, Villa Park and Orange.
