Santa Margarita’s softball team opened the Trinity League on Friday with an upset.

Lyla Morales tossed a four-hit shutout and transfer Clarissa Stayrook drove in the only run in the third inning as the visiting Eagles edged top-ranked JSerra and ace Liliana Escobar 1-0 at JSerra High.

Stayrook, a transfer from Woodbridge who observed the sitout period, plated Lindsay Hudson for No. 9 Santa Margarita (15-3, 1-0).

The one run was all Morales needed to outduel Escobar, The Register’s reigning pitcher of the year.

Morales, a junior, struck out eight.

Escobar, a senior who signed with Florida, scattered six hits and struck out 13 for JSerra (14-3, 0-1).

Scarlett LaBriola and Zoe Xanthos each had two hits for Santa Margarita.

Angie Jimenez had two hits for the Lions, who had the tying run on base in the seventh.

In another Trinity League game Friday:

Orange Lutheran 11, Mater Dei 1: Rylee Silva allowed one run on three hits in six innings and hit a home run to lead the host Lancers (6-3, 1-0).

Silva struck out seven in a game shortened by the mercy rule and went 2 for 3 with four RBIs for No. 4 Orange Lutheran.

JSerra transfer Melia Munoz and Sierra Nichols each had four hits to power Orange Lutheran’s 14-hit attack. Munoz went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.

Orange Lutheran plays at JSerra on Tuesday.
