INGLEWOOD — Up until the final play of the first half, things were looking good for the Inglewood football team.

Led by quarterback Lincoln Jahn, a sophomore transfer from Oaks Christian, the Sentinels scored twice in the first half on touchdown passes to Donovin Randolph for a 12-0 lead.

Los Alamitos snapped the shutout to end the first half on a 9-yard pass from Colin Creason to Beckham Hofland.

“That gave us some hope,” Los Alamitos coach Ray Fenton said.

The Griffins grinded out two second-half touchdowns and kept the Inglewood offense from its big-play capability and held on for a 20-12 win in a season-opening game at Caroline Coleman Stadium.

“I really think not having a scrimmage against (an) opponent hurt us,” Fenton said. “You can’t simulate all of those nerves in practice. We played very jittery in the first half and made so many mistakes against a really good football team.”

After a scoreless first quarter, the Sentinels struck first on Jahn’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Randolph. Jahn didn’t become eligible until right before pregame warmups began.

“I knew I was going to start about an hour before (kickoff),” Jahn said. “I was really excited when they said I could play. I put my stuff on and I was ready.”

Jahn and Randolph connected on a 31-yard pass later in the second quarter for another touchdown. Both extra point attempts were no good, leaving the Sentinels up 12-0. The misses also gave the Griffins a chance to stay in the game.

“You’re up 12-0 and you think you’re skating, then you stall, that’s definitely not how you draw it up,” Inglewood coach Mil’von James said. “We have a lot to build upon. We have a lot of growing to do. We’re a very inexperienced team. There’s a lot of chaos going on right now, but we have to navigate through it and figure out a way to pull out these victories.”

Los Alamitos took a 13-12 lead in the third quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run by Kamden Tillis. The extra point was no good.

Inglewood’s offense certainly stalled in the quarter. The Sentinels had consecutive turnovers on downs to start the third quarter and fumbled on their third possession.

In the fourth, Los Alamitos came up with a blocked punt, which led by Lenny Ibarra’s 2-yard touchdown run that put the Griffins up 20-12.

Inglewood’s final possession got down to the Los Alamitos 20, but time would run out on an incomplete pass on second down.

“Our defense is good. We put ourselves in bad situations all night and they (our defense) came through for us against a very fast football team,” Fenton said. “All that hard work in the summer time paid off because we were able to come through in the second half.”
