Robert Grayeli is no longer the boys and girls water polo coach at Los Alamitos, he and Los Alamitos Unified School District Superintendent Andrew Pulver confirmed.

Grayeli coached the Griffins the past two seasons.

“Personnel matters are confidential, so I’m not able to comment further on the specifics of his departure,” Pulver recently stated in an email.

“We are using this transition as an opportunity to thoughtfully evaluate and strengthen our water polo program in a way that best supports our student-athletes and families,” Pulver added. “Our focus moving forward is on providing a positive, supportive and competitive experience for all participants. We have begun the recruitment process for our next water polo coach and anticipate making an announcement by the end of April.”

In a letter to Los Alamitos water polo families in early March, assistant principal Blake Hyepock indicated that the program is headed in a “new direction.”

“After careful consideration, we have decided to move in a new direction with our water poloprogram,” Hyepock wrote. “We would like to thank coach Grayeli for his efforts and dedication to our student-athletes over the past two years and wish him the best moving forward.”

“We understand that coaching transitions can be challenging for students and families, especiallywhen they occur more than once within a short period of time,” Hyepock added. “Please know that this decision was not made lightly. Our priority is to identify the most qualified leader to guide the program forward and to ensure a stable, positive, and safe environment for all student-athletes.”

When asked asked about his split with Los Alamitos, Grayeli mentioned the time demands of the position.

Grayeli, who played at Costa Mesa, Golden West College and Pepperdine, became the interim coach for Los Alamitos’ boys early in the 2024 season. He replaced longtime coach Dave Carlson, who resigned.

Los Alamitos boys advanced to the CIF-SS playoffs twice under Grayeli.

The Griffins lost to Damien 22-19 in the Division 2 semifinals this past season. In 2024, Los Alamitos fell to Laguna Beach 13-11 in a Division 1 first round playoff match.

Los Alamitos’ girls missed the playoffs in 2024-25 after forfeiting several games for a violation of CIF Southern Section rules for coaches serving suspensions.

This past season, Los Alamitos’ girls lost to Santiago of Corona 10-8 in a Division 1 first round playoff match.
