Los Alamitos football runs past Murrieta Valley to reach Division 2 final
    • November 22, 2025

MURRIETA — The Los Alamitos football team ran for more than 200 rushing yards and scored 23 unanswered points to secure a 23-10 road victory against No. 1-seeded Murrieta Valley in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 semifinals Friday night.

“For us to come back in a very physical football game and kind of just assert ourselves a little bit,” Los Alamitos coach Ray Fenton said. “I’m super proud of our guys as usual.”

The Griffins trailed 10-0 until late in the second quarter but found success as senior quarterback Colin Creason, senior running back Lenny Ibarra and junior running back Kamden Tillis combined for 235 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns on 46 carries to power Los Alamitos’ offense.

“It feels great,” Ibarra said. “Being in the program for four years. We’ve been working all offseason and just been putting in the work every week day in and day out. Just to be here with all of the guys. We’re a brotherhood and we’re nothing without our o-line. Everything goes to them.”

Ibarra ran for a team-high 98 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. Creason had 82 rushing yards and one touchdown 12 carries. The 6-foot-2 quarterback completed 8 of 11 passes for 32 yards. Tillis added 55 rushing yards and one touchdown on 18 carries.

“It feels great just giving it everything I’ve got to my brothers, my seniors,” Tillis said.

Los Alamitos (11-2) will play at San Clemente (9-4) in the Division 2 championship game Friday, Nov. 28, or Saturday, Nov. 29.

The Griffins will seek redemption after losing to the Tritons, 29-9, on Oct. 24 in an Alpha League game during the regular season.

“I’m so grateful because (San Clemente coach) Jaime (Ortiz) and I are really good friends,” Fenton continued. “And anytime you get an opportunity to play a friend in the finals, it’s awesome.”

Murrieta Valley (9-4) was led by sophomore quarterback Ty Isaia, who completed 16 of 26 passes for 126 yards and one interception.

Los Alamitos tried a fake punt on its first possession in their own territory at the 37 but Ibarra’s run was stopped well short at the Griffins’ 25.

Murrieta Valley capitalized on the short field with a 9-yard touchdown run by junior receiver Kayden Borden. The Nighthawks led 7-0 with 7:29 left in the first.

A 27-yard field goal put Murrieta Valley up 10-0 with 22 seconds remaining in the first.

Los Alamitos senior defensive lineman Jackson Renger’s sack energized the Griffins and got them the ball back early in the second quarter.

The Griffins’ offense began picking up first downs with Creason and Tillis leading the team’s rushing attack.

Los Alamitos picked up a key fourth-and-2 from the Murrieta Valley 46 when the Nighthawks jump offside with less than four minutes left in the second. What followed was Tillis’ 8-yard run and Ibarra’s 28-yard run, which set up Creason’s 5-yard touchdown run. The PAT was blocked. The Griffins trailed 10-6 with 2:39 left in the second quarter.

“It was fun,” Creason said. “I just have to do my 1/11th and execute my job.”

Tillis’ 1-yard touchdown run gave Los Alamitos its first lead of the game, 13-10 with 7:39 left in the third quarter.

Ibarra’s 24-yard touchdown run made it 20-10 with 3:05 remaining in the third.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Griffins recovered a fumble after a squid kick. However, on a fourth-and-1 from the 5, Los Alamitos was stopped and turned the ball over on downs with 8 seconds left in the third.

A 31-yard field goal by senior kicker Beckham Hofland, who is committed as a tight end to Boise State, made it 23-10 with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter.

Los Alamitos junior defensive back Marco Alvillar’s interception sealed the Griffins’ victory with 4:26 left in the game.
