Mater Dei and Los Alamitos boys soccer teams win CIF state championships
    • March 15, 2026

The Mater Dei and Los Alamitos boys soccer teams each won a title in the first-ever CIF State soccer championships on Saturday.

Mater Dei won the Division I title by defeating Alvarez of Everett 2-1 in the final at Natomas High School in Sacramento.

Earlier in the day at the same location, Los Alamitos held off Watsonville for a 1-0 victory in the Division III championship game.

This was the first year the CIF held state championships for boys and girls soccer. In past years, the high school soccer season ended with regional finals.

All together, Orange County had three boys teams — Los Alamitos, Mater Dei and University — win state titles and one girls team (Mater Dei).

In the Division I final, Mater Dei took a 2-0 lead in the first half.  It was just the third time all season that Alvarez’s defense allowed two goals in a match.

With four minutes left in the contest, Alvarez scored a goal on a penalty kick.

In the Division III final, the contest was scoreless at halftime, but Carter Coleman scored in the 52nd minute to put Los Alamitos up 1-0.

The Griffins were able to hold off Watsonville’s offensive threats the rest of the way to earn the state championship.
