    • March 18, 2026

THE GAME: Alek Manoah, who is competing for a spot in the Angels’ rotation, gave up seven runs in the Angels’ 8-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night in Mesa, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Manoah lasted four innings, allowing eight hits and four walks. He struck out five. Manoah’s average fastball was 90 mph, and it was only those fastballs that he gave up two homers and a double. He did get 10 whiffs on 20 swings at his changeup. Manoah has a 9.39 ERA in five starts this spring. A former All-Star, Manoah is trying to revive his career after Tommy John surgery. “Spring training is to come, compete, kind of get all the rust off,” Manoah said. “I was rehabbing last year, worked my (butt) off this offseason to come into this spring. Kind of got off to a good start, the first few, and the last couple have kind of just been a grind.” Two of the other pitchers competing for the rotation spot – Ryan Johnson and Jack Kochanowicz – will start the two split-squad games on Wednesday. … Right-hander Sam Bachman entered with one out and runners at the corners, and he allowed both runners to score. Bachman issued a walk and gave up a single on a ground ball through a drawn-in infield, before getting the final two outs. Bachman gave up a run of his own in the next inning, the first run charged to him this spring. He has a 1.08 ERA in 8⅓ innings, with 15 strikeouts. Bachman also threw two fastballs clocked at 100 mph, a milestone he has never reached in a major league regular-season game. He struck out Cubs All-Star Ian Happ with one of his triple-digit pitches. … Right-hander Chase Silseth pitched a scoreless inning, working around a hit and a walk. Silseth gave up six runs in his first game and he’s only allowed once since then, with 10 strikeouts in his last seven innings.

HITTING REPORT: Zach Neto returned to the lineup, three days after suffering a sprained left wrist on a head-first slide into home. Neto struck out and hit two fly outs. He said his wrist felt “normal.” … The Angels struck out seven times and whiffed at 25 pitches in 4⅓ innings from Cubs left-hander Shota Imanaga. … Jo Adell hit a 481-foot homer, his team-leading fourth homer of the spring. … Jeimer Candelario had the Angels’ first hit of the game when he homered in the fifth. It was Candelario’s third home run of the spring. He has a .958 OPS in 45 plate appearances. Candelario is fighting for one of the last roster spots. … Minor leaguer David Calabrese hit a homer.

DEFENSE REPORT: Catcher Logan O’Hoppe threw out a runner trying to steal. O’Hoppe has thrown out three of 11 runners (27%) trying to steal this spring.
