Rosary softball coach Tom Tice reflected on many positive experiences after notching his 500th career win on Monday.

“I was just thinking about the hundreds of big and little success stories that 500 wins represents,” he said following a 14-3 victory against Woodbridge that sealed the milestone at the Dugard Classic.

“All the great student-athletes I’ve coached through the years who have become amazing adults, and the fantastic coaches and parents who I’ve laughed win.”

A member of the Orange County Softball Hall of Fame, Tice is in his 29th season as Rosary’s head coach.

He first took the helm in 1994 and led the Royals for 13 seasons. After spending four years as an assistant, he took the coaching reins again in 2011.

Tice guided Rosary to its first CIF-SS championship in 2021 in Division 4.

Two of his most notable proteges are Natalie Golda and Chelsea Gonzales.

Golda played softball, water polo and a few other sports at Rosary. She became a two-time Olympic medalist in water polo and now coaches the women’s water polo team at Fresno State.

Gonzales starred at Arizona State, became an Olympian for Mexico and is now the coach at Central Arizona College.

Rosary produced another Arizona State standout in slugger Kaitlin Cochran, who played for Team USA.

On Monday, Hayden Huerta went 3 for 3 with a home run to pace Rosary’s offense. Sophomore left-hander Alex Kontogouris allowed one run as the Royals’ pitcher.

Rosary (5-10) is retooling after graduating six seniors and losing six players to transfers.

Tice earned win No. 501 as the Royals edged University 7-6 in their Pacific Coast League opener on Tuesday.

University pitcher Carson Cruz allowed two earned runs and struck out 15.
