Disneyland files confidential demolition permits for Avatar land
    • April 13, 2026

The wrecking ball is coming for the Monsters Inc. dark ride at Disney California Adventure even though Mike, Sulley and the other scare factory workers won’t have to move out until 2027 to make way for a new Avatar land coming to the Anaheim theme park.

Disneyland filed confidential demolition permits with the city of Anaheim for the Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue dark ride and the Hollywood Lounge beverage stand, according to Theme Park IQ.

Disneyland officials confirmed that the permit supports long-term work to enable expansion projects in the Hollywood Land area of Disney California Adventure.

The city permits do not include start dates for the demolition work.

“These are early plan check permits, so don’t expect anything to happen for a while,” according to Theme Park IQ.

Disneyland announced in January that the Monsters Inc. dark ride would remain open until 2027 after facing an early 2026 closing date. Disneyland officials said at the time that the delay in closing the Monsters Inc. attraction would have no impact on the construction timeline for the new Avatar themed land.

Keeping the Monsters Inc. dark ride open as long as possible will enhance the harmony and balance of the guest experience and allow families with young children to continue to enjoy the ride, according to Disneyland officials.

Walt Disney Imagineering remains in the early stages of development on the Avatar project which is not expected to debut until 2028 or 2029.

DCA’s new Avatar themed land will be based on the second film “The Way of Water” from 2022, the third film “Fire and Ash” that debuted in December and other upcoming movies in the franchise.

An innovative boat ride will take riders on a journey through a Pandoran rainforest glowing in luminescent blues, greens and purples.

The Avatar project will push out into the existing Disneyland bus drop off/pick up area. Imagineering is working on the way the Disneyland Monorail will interact with the Avatar land and Disney California Adventure.
