Santa Margarita’s quest for a third CIF State title in boys swimming came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay on Saturday.

The Eagles needed a strong finishing kick, and delivered.

Santa Margarita took second in the meet-ending event to Northwood and edged the defending state champion Timberwolves by 2.5 points to claim the title at Clovis West High in Fresno.

Santa Margarita scored 156.5 points to squeeze past Northwood at 154 and secure its first title since winning in 2023 and 2024.

The girls team competition was even closer. Campolindo edged Archbishop Mitty 149-148 for the title.

Woodbridge’s girls won the 400 free relay and placed a program-best third with 137 points. Six-time defending champion Santa Margarita took seventh.

Northwood won the 400 free relay in 2 minutes, 59.88 seconds, about one second ahead of Santa Margarita.

The Timberwolves’ relay featured Michael Wang (44.87 seconds), Liam von Schonfeldt (46.18), Max Chen (45.52) and anchor Andrew Maksymowski (43.31).

Santa Margarita’s title-clinching 400 free relay consisted of Bennett Korner (45.05), Adam Cuthbert (45.66), Jeffrey Chang (45.49) and Tyler Lee (44.65).

Northwood placed a narrow-second to Valley Christian of San Jose in 200 free relay.

Maksymowski split a 19.71 anchor but Valley Christian finished 1:21.69, fifth one-hundredth of a second ahead of Northwood.

Maksymowski, who is committed to USC, placed second in the 200 free (1:34.92) for the highest individual finish for an O.C. boy.

Calvary Chapel junior Bianca Nwaizu won the girls 100 breaststroke in 59.87 for her second state title in the event.

Woodbridge captured the girls 400 free relay in 3:25.64. The team consisted of Holly Fishburn (52.61), Tanja Amizic (50.56), Peyton Ferrero (53.02) and Isabella Parker (49.45).

Mater Dei diver Gianna Kenrick opened the meet Thursday by winning the Monarchs’ first state title with a score of 520.70.
