Los Alamitos baseball team forfeits six games in Sunset League
    • April 1, 2026

The Los Alamitos baseball team has forfeited six games because one of its players violated a CIF rule by playing on a non-high school team during the season.

The Griffins forfeited three wins over Edison in the Sunset League and three league wins over Marina. They also had to forfeit an 8-0 loss to Newport Harbor in league on Tuesday.

Los Alamitos’ record is now 5-11 overall and 2-8 in the Sunset League.

According to the CIF Southern Section constitution and by-laws: “A student on a high school team becomes ineligible if the student competes in a contest on an ‘outside’ team, in the same sport, during the student’s high school season of sport.”

After the forfeits, Marina is 4-5 in league and Edison is 4-6.

The top four teams in a seven-team league like the Sunset League are automatic qualifiers for the CIF Southern Section playoffs. Teams that are not automatic qualifiers are eligible for at-large berth consideration if they have an overall record of .500 or better.

Los Alamitos has 11 games remaining, including eight Sunset League games. Three of those Sunset games are against league-leading Huntington Beach, the No. 2 team in the Orange County Top 25.

Los Alamitos High School said in a statement: “ Los Alamitos High School has worked collaboratively with CIF Southern Section regarding a violation of Article 60, Bylaw 600 (Outside Competition). As a result of CIF’s determination, the Varsity Baseball team will forfeit six games.”

“We do not believe any student-athletes knowingly violated CIF rules or intended to impact their team. Additionally, the coaching staff was not aware of the outside participation involved.”
