Different formula keeps Fullerton baseball winning against Laguna Hills
    • April 4, 2026

LAGUNA HILLS – Fullerton High’s baseball team enjoyed successful seasons in recent years with heavy-hitting teams.

A put-the-ball-in play approach is working fine, too, this season.

Fullerton took advantage of three errors to score four runs in the third inning on the way to a 5-2 win over Laguna Hills in an Empire League game Friday at Laguna Hills High.

Fullerton (13-4 overall) is in first place in league with a 5-0 record as it pursues a fifth straight league championship. The Indians are No. 18 in the Orange County Top 25.

Laguna Hills is 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the five-team Empire League.

Fullerton senior pitcher Evan Terrazas threw six innings Friday. He allowed a run in the first inning and shut out the Hawks for the next five innings. He gave up five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

All seven of Fullerton’s hits were singles.

“It’s kind of different from years past when we had some thump,” said Fullerton coach Shaun Hill, who averaged 21 wins a year during his previous four seasons at the school. “We’re more of line drive guys who run really well and put the ball in play.”

Laguna Hills took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nate Medina led off the inning with a triple. Medina scored on a sacrifice fly by Jaiden Magana.

Terrazas said he refused to let the triple by Medina shake him up.

“I just tried to execute my pitches,” Terrazas said. “Keep the ball out of the middle of the strike zone and paint some pitches.”

Fullerton’s four-run third inning started with a single by Lucas Delgadillo. Ronnie Martinez followed by reaching on an error with Delgadillo moving to second base. Sammy Chacon’s infield single loaded the bases with no outs.

A fielder’s choice and an error on the play allowed Delgadillo and Martinez to score to put Fullerton on top 2-1. Mason Park, who went into the game batting .455, got on board on another error with Colin Williams scoring from second base to make it 3-1. Caleb Brown’s single drove in Park for a 4-1 lead.

Fullerton’s Mateo Martinez singled to drive in Luke Gonzalez to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Laguna Hills put together three hits, including an RBI single by Magana, in the seventh inning to score a run for the final 5-2 tally.

Terrazas said Friday’s game was typical of how the season has gone for Fullerton.

“We’re getting a lot of infield hits,” he said. “We’re more of a singles team this year. Last year we hit a lot of triples and home runs.”

Laguna Hills plays in the Santa Ana Elks Tournament that begins Saturday. The Hawks are at home Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against Hueneme.

Fullerton plays two league games next week against Katella, starting Tuesday at Katella.

Fullerton plays at Corona, No. 3 in the Prep Baseball Report state rankings, on May 4.
