Man caught with Joker-inspired rifle, other weapons near Trump National Golf Course, authorities say
    • April 16, 2026

A man accused of carrying a loaded rifle painted to look like a toy gun inspired by the Joker character from “Batman” and wearing a heavy-duty ballistic vest while walking in traffic lanes in Rancho Palos Verdes was arrested by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies last month, authorities said.

The man, also armed with two handguns, admitted he had earlier fired a pistol near the Rancho Palos Verdes landslide area to “get some anger out,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lomita Station said in a Facebook post on Monday, April 13.

Deputies found Steiner running through traffic on Palos Verdes Drive South near the Trump National Golf Course, authorities said, armed with a semi-automatic AR pistol and a loaded revolver, with other weapons nearby.

Sean Steiner, 36, of Glendale, Arizona, was taken into custody and booked on felony firearm charges, the department said. Inmate records show he was arrested on March 29 and released on bond on April 1.

He has since been charged with four felony counts, including possession of an assault weapon, possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, carrying a loaded firearm in public under specific circumstances, and manufacturing a large-capacity magazine, court records show. He has pleaded not guilty.

Deputies responded after a concerned resident “saw something that didn’t sit right … and made the call,” the department wrote.

The rifle, painted green and purple, also had “Joker-style” phrases, including, “Why so serious?” and, “Let’s put a smile on that face” — phrases used by the character played by Heath Ledger in “Batman: The Dark Knight.”

The tip of the barrel was painted orange to resemble a toy gun, officials said. Investigators also found two loaded handguns, high-capacity magazines and extra ammo and a ballistic vest capable of stopping rifle rounds.

“Let that sink in,” the department wrote, “an armed individual, firing a weapon, walking through traffic and trails … in a populated area.

“Because someone spoke up, deputies were able to safely detain him before anyone was hurt,” officials wrote. “Your call could be the one that prevents the next tragedy.”
