Driver arrested in alleged road rage incident involving bicyclists in Newport Beach
    • March 27, 2026

A Corona man was arrested on Thursday, March 26 after an alleged road rage confrontation with bicyclists in Newport Beach on Saturday, police said.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on March 21, when Newport Beach police said a dispute broke out between the cyclists and the driver of a blue BMW sedan.

One of the cyclists involved, Luke Fetzer, described the encounter in posts on social media, saying he and a friend had been riding single file and turning right from Poppy Avenue onto Pacific Coast Highway when the confrontation began.

Fetzer said the driver honked, swerved toward them and pulled alongside them while a passenger yelled slurs.

When Fetzer and his friend stopped at a red light, Fetzer said he reacted in the moment.

“I was angry, adrenaline was pumping,” Fetzer said in a video posted on social media. “These guys had just tried to kill us by swerving their car into us and in the heat of the moment, I grabbed my water bottle and squirted it onto his car while he was stopped at the red light. I had no idea that they were gonna try and run us off the road.”

Fetzer said he then began recording the encounter on his phone.

Video footage of the incident shows the blue sedan driving behind the cyclists in a bike lane, accelerating and honking. At one point, Fetzer’s friend is seen jumping onto a curb with his bike, apparently to avoid the vehicle. The footage also appears to show a passenger throwing water at Fetzer.

According to Fetzer, the situation escalated a few miles later near a Shake Shack, where the driver and several others exited their vehicles and confronted the cyclists. Fetzer said the driver and four other people blocked traffic lanes, made threats and attempted to tackle them off their bikes.

Fetzer also shared what he said was a direct message from the driver after the incident.

“Hey bro let’s both sign waivers and meetup for a consensual Full MMA sparring session,” the message reads. “Let’s settle this like men.”

On March 26, investigators served a search warrant at a residence in Corona, where they arrested the driver and seized a blue BMW M3 “as evidence”, according to police.

The driver was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and obstructing or delaying an officer, police said.

    The investigation is continuing.

The driver could not be reached for comment.

Police ask anyone with additional information to contact Newport Beach police Sgt. Sabrina Fabbri at sfabbri@nbpd.org.
