St. Paul football still looking for a win after falling to Servite
    • September 27, 2025

SANTA FE SPRINGS — The search for the St. Paul football team’s first win of the season continues after a 49-8 loss to Servite in a nonleague game on Friday night.

St. Paul coach Mike Moschetti was brutally honest about his team’s execution vs. the Friars.

“We got a long way to go. We gotta start from square one on Monday,” Moschetti said. “Offensively, we’re struggling in pass protection, we’re struggling throwing it, we’re struggling running the ball. We’re undisciplined.”

Marley Luatua scored the St. Paul’s lone touchdown of the game. The junior running back finished with a team-high 26 rushing yards.

Despite coming into the game as the big underdog, the Swordsmen came out swinging vs. the Friars. Both teams quickly exchanged punts on their opening drives.

It looked like Servite’s defense was going to force back-to-back three-and-outs to begin the game as the Swordsmen trotted out their punt unit on fourth down.

St. Paul caught the Friars off guard and ran a fake punt that set them up inside the red zone.

Building on the momentum, St. Paul’s offense got the ball to the Friars’ 1-yard line before getting stuffed on fourth and goal for a turnover on downs.

After getting shut out in the first quarter, it took the Friars less than a minute to find the end zone to begin the second quarter.

Servite running back Jorden Wells took off for a 71-yard touchdown to put the Friars up 7-0 with 11:20 left in the first half. Wells ended his night with two touchdowns.

The Swordsmen were on the verge of falling behind 14-0 early in the second quarter. Servite had the ball at St. Paul’s 1-yard line, but failed to punch it in as the Swordsmen came up with a goal-line stand of their own.

Pinned deep in his own end zone, St. Paul quarterback Gabriel Castaneda threw his first interception of the game. And it was a costly one as the Friars returned it for a touchdown to go up 14-0.

As time expired, Servite added one more score as quarterback Kale Murphy connected with Benjamin Harris for a 9-yard score to push the to 21-0 going to halftime.

Harris went to work again, scoring his second score of the game on the Friars’ opening drive of the second half on a 65-yard touchdown reception.

This time, the Swordsmen were able to respond as Luatua pounded in a 14-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 28-8 with 8:18 in the third quarter.

Harris scored his third and final touchdown of the night on a 30-yard touchdown run to give Servite a four-score lead.

Servite picked off Castaneda for a second time to begin the fourth quarter. Castaneda ended his night with 157 yards, his second-highest total of the season.

The Swordsmen will need to quickly flip the page as they travel to Cathedral next week in their Angelus League opener.

“They’ve beaten us two years in a row. It’s a big game for my family. … It’s a big game for St. Paul. We gotta find a way to go to Los Angeles and find a (win),” Moschetti said.
