Tyler George throws shutout, hits HR as Santa Margarita baseball beats Servite
    • March 25, 2026

ANAHEIM – Anyone trying to figure out who was the player of the game for the Servite and Santa Margarita baseball game Tuesday had an easy time of it.

Sophomore Tyler George pitched a shutout and hit a two-run home run for the Eagles in their 2-0 win over Servite in the Trinity League opener for both teams at Servite High.

Santa Margarita (11-2 overall) is ranked No. 3 in the Orange County Top 25 and Servite (7-4) is No. 7.

George, a lanky 6-foot-5 right-hander, allowed two hits and zero walks and struck out four in his first varsity complete game. He said everything he threw was working well, and he was able to pinpoint his fastball.

“My command of the fastball went really well,” George said. “My slider and curveball worked really well and my changeup was good.”

Santa Margarita coach Chris Malec was impressed.

“Tyler was super-composed,” Malec said. “And he didn’t walk anybody. He was forcing soft contact to help keep his pitch count down.”

George is 6-0 with a 1.09 ERA. He has walked only two batters in 32 innings.

Malec also praised Servite starting pitcher Wyatt Karges, a sophomore right-hander who also displayed a wicked breaking pitch. Karges shut out the Eagles on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts before getting replaced on the mound with two outs in the fifth inning.

“You had two really good young arms for both sides out there,” Malec said. “Both of them did a really good job keeping their team in the ballgame.”

Good pitching is a staple for Santa Margarita. Last season the Eagles, who lost to Trinity League rival St. John Bosco, 3-2, in nine innings in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game, had Brennan Bauer who was All-Orange County first team as a senior.

George pulled an inside fastball over the high fence in right field in the top of the sixth inning for a home run, his first at the varsity level, for a 2-0 lead. Andre Owens, who had singled earlier in the inning, also scored on the homer.

George’s 13 RBIs are second-most on the team to freshman Cooper Holland’s 15 RBIs.

Servite got its first baserunner with two outs in the fourth inning. The Friars’ best scoring opportunity came in the fifth inning when they had runners on first and third bases with two outs. George’s fourth and final strikeout finished the inning.

The Eagles had baserunners in each of the first four innings. They finally broke through on the George homer.

Santa Margarita has an offensive void to fill, with two-time All-Orange County infielder Brody Schumaker out for the season because of a shoulder injury suffered last week in a Las Vegas tournament. Filling in for Schumaker at shortstop is sophomore Warren Wulfemeyer whose grandfather Mark Wulfemeyer had the CIF Southern Section boys basketball career scoring record when he concluded his four years at Troy in the early 1970s.

Santa Margarita is 8-2 against Servite in league games since the start of the 2023 season.

The Eagles and Friars play each other twice more this week. Wednesday they meet at 2:30 p.m. at Santa Margarita and then Friday at 3:15 p.m. at Servite.
