The following 220 students have nominated for the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Award for Theater by teachers and private instructors representing Orange County high schools and arts organizations.

Each nominee is listed below with an endorsement from their nominating teacher. When available, links to the student’s work are also included.

    Saffryn Adams

“Saffryn Adams is one of the most talented singers, dancers, and actors I’ve had the pleasure of teaching. … She performed as Kathryn Howard in our production of ‘Six’ and brought the audience to tears with her mature portrayal of the complicated character. Most recently, she won the role of Wednesday Addams in our upcoming spring musical, ‘The Addams Family.’ She is a true triple threat and is bound for great things.” — Emily Tucker, Capistrano Valley High School

    Leksi Akerlind

“Aleksis ‘Leksi’ Akerlind is a joy to work with and a true artistic scholar. She is incredibly articulate, deeply thoughtful, and consistently ready to create. Whether she is walking into an audition, stepping into class, or beginning a rehearsal, Leksi brings the best version of herself every time. Her preparation, focus, and curiosity set a high standard for her peers and make her an invaluable member of our artistic community. … Leksi is a reliable actor, singer, and dancer — a well-rounded artist whose consistency, discipline, and heart shine through in everything she does. She listens deeply, works with purpose, and continually strives to grow.” — Kennedy Kemmerer, Santa Margarita Catholic High School

“Aaron is a smart, funny and dedicated performer who always brings her very best from her first moment on stage. Her passion for performing is evident when you see her on stage. She is incredibly versatile as both a singer and an actor. Seeing her on stage you would ever expect to hear such a mature sound come from such a small body. She is a wonderful young woman who would make an excellent Artist of the Year.” — Cathy Petz, Yorba Linda High School

    Olivia Alpert

“The most impressive quality that Ms. Alpert possesses is her motivation to help those around her. Her maturity and strong leadership skills make her a strong force in my theater community. … She continues to show growth, and more particularly, an eagerness to learn and improve her craft. Ms. Alpert has the ability to handle setbacks and disappointment with stride, taking steps forward to make the best of a situation rather than stewing on the negative while propelling those around her to do the same. She has grown into a wonderfully confident actress who is a true triple threat. She demonstrated tremendous skill and electric stage presence in her ‘Urinetown’ performance last year. We also were able to trust her to have the drive and confidence to command the stage in many different high stakes ensemble roles.” — Cambria Graff, San Juan Hills High School

“As a performer, Zach demonstrates both artistry and courage. Onstage, he is magnetic — committed, present, and endlessly inventive. His recent portrayal of Judas in ‘Godspell’ was deeply moving, balancing humor with emotional depth while pushing him beyond his comfort zone as someone relatively new to solo singing. As Dr. Chasuble in ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ he revealed a gift for classical comedy, mastering the rhythm and wit of Wilde while keeping his performance grounded in genuine, fun-loving character work.” — Cheryl Des Palmes, Tesoro High School

    Nathan Andreas

“Nathan is a star performer, a triple threat, and an inspiring artist. All of his accolades, talent and hard work, stand on their own, and elevate him to the top of an outstandingly talented group of peers. …He is also kind, and humble. He is consistently cast as the lead in most shows, and demonstrates a range of talent. From playing Paul San Marco in ‘A Chorus Line’ and bringing the audience to tears, to playing Shrek in ‘Shrek’ and busting us up with fart jokes, Nathan can do it all.” — Jenny McClintock, Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts

    Damian Arceo

“Damian is an ambitious actor, who constantly pushes himself to inhabit the roles he plays. Since his freshman year, he has impressed me with his inventiveness, humor, and willingness to try different approaches to the varying characters he played. Whether he is performing in a musical, horror story, drama, or campy comedy, he transcends the role and delights the audience.” — Jeffrey Brem, Sonora High School

“Ani entered our program as a newcomer to Irvine, but quickly found a home in the world of design and production. From her earliest projects, she was hooked and curious about production and design. Rather than simply participating in our curriculum, she maximized every opportunity for leadership, competition, and design, shaping her high school experience around her passion for theater technology.” — Samantha Sanford, Portola High School

“Alicia’s greatest asset is her ability to completely inhabit disparate worlds and characters. Her unforgettable portrayal of Damian in ‘Mean Girls’ showcased her impeccable comedic timing, stage presence, and capacity for delivering sharp, contemporary humor that delighted our audiences. Yet, in the very same year, she anchored our classical production as Viola in ‘Twelfth Night.’ This performance demanded profound emotional depth, flawless mastery of iambic pentameter, and the physical commitment of a traditional breeches role, demonstrating her range from modern satire to Shakespearean romance.”  – Antonio Moon, Beckman High School

    Isabella Bassett

Recently, she has created a beautifully dynamic lighting design for our production of ‘Macbeth.’ In addition, she is also extremely adept at stage management, and is currently our production stage manager for our production of ‘Sweeney Todd.’ On top of all of this, she is our lead Cappies critic and she is ultimately dedicated to creating a great and collaborative creative environment in which to production work in.” — Cambria Graff, San Juan Hills High School

“Although Derek recently joined our drama program, appearing in his first show last spring, he has become and integral part of our community. Derek is perhaps one of the funniest students we have had, with a quick wit and creativity seldom have had. He does not hesitate to fully commit to characters, both physically and vocally, and is not afraid to go out of his comfort zone or the standard expectations. His confidence is palpable and he makes bold choices without apology.” — Sarah Portwood, Costa Mesa High School

    Miley Kate Beshore

“Miley Beshore is a true triple threat whose talent, leadership, and heart make her an extraordinary young artist. She excels equally in singing, dancing, and acting, bringing a level of versatility and professionalism that elevates every production she joins. Throughout her time in our theatre program, Miley has embraced a wide range of roles with enthusiasm and artistry, always delivering performances grounded in authenticity and skill.” — Leslee Myers, Crean Lutheran High School

    Aurora Biriba

“Aurora approaches each character with discipline, and she consistently delivers grounded, exciting, polished performances. In rehearsal, Aurora is not afraid to take risks and make bold choices. Most recently, in our production of ‘Midsummer/Jersey,’ Aurora consistently had us laughing at new interpretations of lines, or bold gestures beating up on her ‘boyfriend,’ in the show. Our fight scene would not have been the same without her creativity and willingness to do anything to bring the show to life.” — Cheryl Des Palmes, Tesoro High School

“Ayah Blake is one of the funniest, most talented actresses I’ve worked with. She surprised us all in her breakout comedic role last year in ‘Mean Girls’ as the perpetually lost Karen, and made some of the funniest acting choices I’ve witnessed. She contrasted that ultra feminine performance as the male, slimy, evil, comedic pirate, Captain Slank in ‘Peter and the Starcatcher.’ This year, she won the coveted role of Anne of Cleves in our production of ‘Six the Musical,’ and not only wowed audiences with her dancing and singing, but also her comedic timing and relatability.” — Emily Tucker, Capistrano Valley High School

    Isabella Blodgett

“Isabella Blodgett is a force to be reckoned with. Her hilarious character portrayals combined with her amazing vocals have been impressing audiences since she came on my stage as a freshman. … This year, she was Anne Boleyn in our production of ‘Six,’ and was recently given the role of Alice in ‘The Addams Family.’ As her resume proves, she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. She is a very talented dramatic and comedic actress and singer.” — Emily Tucker, Capistrano Valley High School

    Rachel Bramlett

“Rachel is one of the hardest working students I’ve encountered in theater. She balances a busy life with choir and theater and her ambition is a big as her heart. She has served on the theater board, studied stagecraft, and participated in our summer arts program taking on memorable roles such as a flying monkey in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and Sob Sister in ‘Radium Girls.’ Watching her grow her skills and continue to strive to be her best is a joy!” — Marianne Stewart, Cypress High School

Though she possesses remarkable talent and dedication, Tatum has been cast in supporting roles rather than leads. Instead of allowing this to diminish her commitment, she embraces every character with sincerity and skill, proving that standout artistry thrives wherever an actor chooses to shine.” — Meghan Minguez-Marshall, Laguna Beach High School

    Brayden Brisbois

“Brayden is a deeply committed and talented performer who immerses himself fully into every role. His portrayal of the Creature in ‘Frankenstein’ was heartbreaking, conveying the humanity of his character in a way that moved audiences profoundly. Beyond his individual performances, Brayden raises the level of commitment and energy in those around him, inspiring his peers to give their best. His artistic skill combines thoughtful character exploration with emotional authenticity, bringing depth and heart to every stage moment.” — Dan Pacheco, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School

Her desire to grow and her consistency in all her tasks along the way inspires others to raise the bar. Riley’s kind spirit and determination only enhance the talent which is already there.” — Madison Leal, Mater Dei High School

    Jason Brown

“Jason is a natural leader — someone who inspires confidence, sets the tone for excellence, and elevates every space he enters. His artistic talent is fueled not only by his innate abilities but by a sharp, inquisitive mind that allows him to approach performance with insight, creativity, and discipline. He is the kind of performer who asks thoughtful questions, analyzes material deeply, and brings fully realized, dynamic work to the stage. What sets Jason apart even further is his extraordinary capacity to thrive under a demanding schedule. In addition to maintaining a rigorous rehearsal and performance load, he is also a committed student-athlete, demonstrating determination and balance in multiple disciplines.” — Nathan Longdon, Dana Hills High School

    Abby Bryan

“Abby Bryan is the de facto costume lead of the JSerra theater company, and she fulfills that role with remarkable dedication and talent. She works tirelessly to generate creative concepts, manages a department of four students, and serves as the heart and soul of our program. Abby has performed in all three of our productions this year, and people cannot help but smile when she enters a room; she brings energy, preparation, and a genuine interest in others — qualities that are all too rare in the arts. She is selfless, responsible, and extraordinarily gifted at costume design.”  – Patrick Szyman, JSerra Catholic High School

She is a dedicated, self-disciplined student who loves to challenge herself and approaches every opportunity in theatre with seriousness, curiosity, and heart. Her love for the craft is evident in the way she prepares, the way she works, and the way she continually pushes herself to grow. …In the classroom, she listens deeply, applies feedback with purpose, and elevates discussions through her insight and commitment. Her auditions demonstrate preparation, clarity, and genuine connection. Her performances demonstrate vulnerability, strength, and storytelling instinct.” — Kennedy Kemmerer, Santa Margarita Catholic High School

    Grayce Burke

“Grayce is an artist who understands that theatre carries responsibility—to the audience, the story, and the community it serves. She approaches her work with intention and purpose, consistently asking how art can move people to think, feel, and act differently. Grayce excels in both process and product. As a performer, she brings focus, emotional clarity, and thoughtful storytelling to the stage. As an ensemble member, she values rehearsal as a space for experimentation and shared problem-solving, supporting peers and strengthening the collective work. She recognizes that theatre is most powerful when it is bigger than any single role.” — Ranae Bettger, University High School

    Brooklynn Calder

“Brooklyn began her journey in our program with a focus on technical theatre, excelling in areas such as costumes, lighting, and crew leadership. In the past year, however, she has followed her passion for performance, transitioning onto the stage with increasing confidence, skill, and presence. Brooklyn is a positive spirit in rehearsal. She consistently brings joy, generosity, and a sense of fun that helps create a welcoming environment where ensembles thrive. After four years in theater, Dorian has grown from struggling to project to the kind of student who lights up the stage and fills the room with is laughter and voice. From his memorable role as the hysterical Mr. Green in ‘Clue,’ to The Professor in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ to taking the lead as student director of ‘Radium Girls,’ he makes his performances and leadership roles look easy, but he puts in the late hours and works hard with a smile. Even when absolutely saving the day by helping out with a set mishap late into the evening, Dorian was making us all laugh as we put in the final bits of work. He is a joy to be around. We are all better because of him.” — Marianne Stewart, Cypress High School

    Shourya Chaurasia

“Shourya has cracked us all up with a ‘Spider-Man’ monologue, broken all of our hearts as Laurie in ‘Little Women,’ made us cringe as a villain Charlie Lee in ‘Radium Girls’ and absolutely brought the house to tears screaming with laughter at his performance as Nikos Argitakos. Even when she isn’t directed to do so, I can always count on Melody to immediately create levels, raise the stakes, and be bold in her choices on stage. Quirky characters are her sweet spot. The joy she takes in creating a character that is unexpected and outrageous is evident in her whole body when she is on stage.” — Kathleen Switzer, El Dorado High School

“Annika is a passionate and creative force within the theater community, fully committed to making the most of her high school drama experience. Beyond Arianna’s commitment to her acting craft, she is a natural leader among our ensemble. While not overtly talkative and demonstrative, on stage she transforms into a self-assured performer that impresses in all three phases of her triple-threat capabilities. As an actor, Gia will grasp you with her emotional range even when not speaking. Her exterior countenance reveals the inner storm in completely believable and gripping ways. As a singer, Gia has the power to belt out the strong high notes, but can also wrap an audience in her soulful ballads.” — Jeremy Golden, Aliso Niguel High School

    Maddie Dasilva

“Maddie DaSilva is an extremely hard working, talented actress, singer, and dancer. A true triple threat. As a sophomore, she was cast as one of the leads in ‘Mean Girls,’ playing Janis (one of the narrators who run the whole show). This year, she played Katherine of Aragon in ‘Six,’ for which she received many glowing reviews for her acting strength as well as vocal ability.” — Emily Tucker, Capistrano Valley High School

    Ariana Davila

“Adriana Davila began three years ago as a student in need of some direction. She auditioned for the play and found a home. I am incredibly proud of Adriana’s growth over the past three years. She is now a member of our mariachi program where I watched to my amazement her singing one of the songs and I had no idea she could sing. She is a dynamic force of nature on stage. She is tiny, but she commands the stage with energy and passion in every performance. She is by far one of the most energetic and enthusiastic performers in our program. She is amazing.” — Terry Schwinge, Santa Ana High School

She is a powerful vocalist and an engaging actress. Last year she played the role of Charon in our production of ‘The Lightning Thief’ and delivered a bold, knock-out performance that had the audience cheering every night. There is an honesty and freshness in Kaitlyn’s performances that can frequently feel missing from someone who comes in so prepared.” — Kathleen Switzer, El Dorado High School

    Charlee Del Bello

“From leading roles as Mrs. Darbus in ‘High School Musical,’ to Hannah in ‘Little Women,’ to Mrs. Alma MacNeil in ‘Radium Girls,’ she has range in the way she brings characters to life and makes them into real people on stage. “Samantha, known as Sami to everyone, is what you would call the ‘real’ deal. Every role is studied, but comes off effortlessly, she sings like a dream, she embodies every facet of a character unlike any high school student. Most importantly, she is kind, supportive of her fellow students and actors, sees herself as part of the process and as part an ensemble no matter the size of the role she has played. … She also is a talented visual artist and is helming one of our student directed pieces this winter. She is one of the students where you look at each other and say ‘Is there anything she can’t do?’” — Michael Betts, Trinitas Arts Conservatory

“Beschen Dietrich is fascinating to watch as a performer. As the lead in ‘Puffs,’ he shows a depth of character in Wayne that others missed. He has a wide range from serious to comedic. In ‘Twelve Angry Jurors.’ he has paid such attention to the details of his character, from facial expressions, to small gestures, he is one of the most interesting characters in the show to watch. He is one of the few who truly listen and respond as if it is the first time he has heard something. He takes feedback and inquires for more. He cares about his craft and while he is a natural, he puts in the time and effort to go above and beyond to learn lines, blocking, and the smallest of details.” — Sarah Portwood, Costa Mesa High School

Luke’s positivity, kindness, and collaborative spirit make him a joy to work with, and his intrinsic motivation sets him apart. He pushes himself harder than any student I have, holding himself to a standard of excellence while managing an incredibly full schedule.” — Meghan Minguez-Marshall, Laguna Beach High School

    Andrew Dove

“Andrew’s journey showcases remarkable growth, marked by challenging and deeply impactful roles. His portrayal of Tom in ‘These Shining Lives’ required a nuanced sensitivity to historical drama and complex emotional restraint, grounding a difficult narrative. This depth was further explored in his tender, iconic performance as George Gibbs in ‘Our Town,’ where he skillfully navigated the simple, yet profound, arc of youth and loss, connecting deeply with audiences. Most recently, as Sebastian in ‘Twelfth Night,’ Andrew proved his versatility by mastering Elizabethan text and inhabiting a pivotal, energetic role that requires both comedic timing and sincerity.” — Antonio Moon, Beckman High School

This progression speaks volumes about Yen’s work ethic, commitment, and willingness to learn. As stage manager, Yen serves as the leader of our production team, overseeing backstage operations, coordinating technical elements, and ensuring that each production runs smoothly. Their organizational skills, attention to detail, and calm leadership under pressure make them an invaluable asset to every show.” — Eva McCully, Westminster High School

“Catherine possesses the skills and drive to elevate any room she walks into. She has grown to take her craft of stage management seriously and encourages others to intertwine fun and professionality, which is uncommon at the high school level. Catherine has called several shows completely independently and she will always pick up the slack, but one of her strengths is also relying on her community for support. Catherine delegates well and defers to others because she deeply believes that it takes the whole team. She excels in bringing new faces into the program as well spreading the joy it is to be a theatre arts student.” — Madison Leal, Mater Dei High School

    Bethan Elliott

“Bethan Elliott is one of the hardest working students I have the joy of teaching. This year, she has been our program’s ‘Swiss Army Knife’ — stage managing ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ starring in our winter production of ‘Clue’ and portraying Yente in our spring musical. She has taken on all of these demanding roles while simultaneously running marketing and publicity for our student-led theatre company and maintaining strong, positive working relationships with everyone around her. Bethan’s dedication is second to none, and her talent, professionalism, and drive point to a very bright future in the performing arts.” — Patrick Szyman, JSerra Catholic High School

    Addison Engelken

“Her performances are rich, nuanced, and always deeply honest. She approaches each character with rigorous research and the focused discipline of a young artist who truly cares about her craft. In ‘Hadestown’ rehearsal, we originally struggled making the plot clear to the audience and Addy was instrumental in explaining many songs to the cast and frankly, to me. She had deep insight and understanding of each song which helped me direct and facilitate an understanding of the show that multiple audience members commented on directly after seeing our production.” — Cheryl Des Palmes, Tesoro High School

“Aaliyah is an exceptional performer and student. She packs more energy, passion and talent into her tiny frame then most. She always give more than 100% to everything she does and that definitely includes performing. She is best at improv, which is difficult, but Aaliyah excels at it and her creativity is incredible to see. … She balances her dedication to the dance school in our community, The Wooden Floor, our drama program and her exceptional grades. She really is one in a million.” — Terry Schwinge, Santa Ana High School

    Maria Espinosa Ventura

“Maria brings life, character, and intention to every moment she is onstage, and she can always be counted on to elevate both rehearsal and performance with her focus and enthusiasm. In musical ensembles especially, she is a standout—fully engaged, vocally strong, and committed to storytelling. Last year in Hadestown, I repeatedly found myself moving Maria to the front of the group and downstage, or wherever the focus was, to bring energy, character and interest to the tableau or song.” — Cheryl Des Palmes, Tesoro High School

    Shylan Fernandez

“Shylan Fernandez is new to my department this year, but quickly took the place by storm. It is not very often that I witness a high school actress with such clear vision, dynamic choices, and maturity beyond her years. She quickly claimed and has been working Lady Macbeth and Mrs. Lovett in repertory, which would be challenging for most students, but she has been proceeding with ease and claiming her storytelling like a pro. The best thing about learning who Ms. Fernandez is, is discovering that she is also a modestly confident and kind student.” — Cambria Graff, San Juan Hills High School

    Claire Fincher

“Claire Fincher is supremely dedicated and focused on her goals. She works tirelessly to hone her craft. Dedicates to vocal work, focuses attentions on her acting lessons, gives clear attention to her dancing. She finds ways to give more and more to the project at hand. Claire makes her mark in so many areas. …Her talents as a singer translate well into teaching the music to her peers. As a performer, Claire lights up the stage with her presence.” — Jeremy Golden, Aliso Niguel High School

She is well rounded academically and socially.” — Sarah Portwood, Costa Mesa High School

She was an underdog when she arrived as a freshman, but quickly made a name for herself scoring a role in the fall play, for which we won first place in the California Educational Theatre Association competition. …She went on to get a starring role in ‘Peter and the Starcatcher,’ demonstrating her comedic abilities as Nanny Bumbrake. This year she blew audiences away with her portrayal of Katherine Parr in our production of ‘Six the Musical, Teen Edition.’” — Emily Tucker, Capistrano Valley High School

    Chance Ibanez

“Chance is a triple threat! He is an incredible actor, singer, and musician! When not gracing the Savanna stage with his multitude of accents and character voices you will find him playing bass in the Savanna jazz band or singing in our choir department. He has been an incredible leading actor in several Savanna theater productions since it’s revival last year.” — Vanesssa Montgomery, Savanna High School

His dedication is remarkable, but what truly sets Nick apart is the heart he brings to his craft.” — Elise Ybarra, Corona del Mar High School

His natural gifts are undeniable, but it is his work ethic, drive, and heart that will sustain his success. He is the kind of student every teacher dreams of teaching and coaching — focused, generous, and brave. After two years at his previous high school, Isaiah realized that his theatre program was not providing the level of challenge or training he desired. Her recent performance as Sister Laurence in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was outstanding—so thoughtful and compelling that she convinced me the role is even stronger when played by a woman (as opposed to a Friar). … Mature, reliable, and a true team player, Miley contributes positively both onstage and behind the scenes.” — Jenny McClintock, Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts

    Aidan Nelson

“Aidan Nelson is an outstanding member of Cypress theater and has been a warm leader for many of our shows during his four years in our program. “All of his performances are engaging and fun, but they are made even more significant if you are aware of how much he has had to overcome in his life just to be able to communicate. Fernando’s parents were told that he would potentially never talk and certainly was not expected to be able to attend and graduate from a traditional high school. He has defied the odds repeatedly and it can be seen most clearly in the work that he does every day on the stage. He has to work so much harder than all his peers both on and off the stage, and he continues to do it with a smile on his face.” — Kathleen Switzer, El Dorado High School

    Sophia Okerlund

“Sophia Okerlund is soulful beyond her years. In the six years I’ve known her, she has grown immensely. I have seen her overcome obstacles which would have stopped most high schoolers in their tracks, and to become a popular and charismatic leader school wide, not just in our Acting Conservatory. She is not only resilient, but kind, sensitive, generous and authentic. And all of that is apparent in her acting. She has a depth, heart, leadership and power that is rare in any actor, much less a high school girl.” — John Walcutt, Orange County School of the Arts
