Woodbridge football’s remarkable run ends with loss in CIF state finals
    • December 14, 2025

FULLERTON — The Woodbridge football team made an unexpected run to reach the CIF State Division 7-AA championship game on Saturday. But the Warriors weren’t able to add one more highlight to their amazing season.

The Warriors had some success moving the ball but hurt themselves with turnovers and lost to Redding Christian 16-0 at Fullerton High School.

The Lions finished their season unbeaten (15-0).

Woodbridge (7-9) held the high-powered offense for Redding Christian to its lowest point total of the season and even shut out the Lions in the second half.

Woodbridge first-year coach Connor McBride praised his team for overcoming early setbacks to make an incredible turnaround to finish the season as CIF Southern Section and CIF Southern California Regional champions.

“I’m glad that they’re competitors,” McBride said. “We feel (bad) about this game … but to still be Southern Section CIF champs. We’re still going to get a ring, still have that trophy.”

After starting their season by losing their first seven games, the Warriors rallied to tie for third place in the Omicron League. They won a coin toss for the league’s final guaranteed playoff spot, then went 4-0 in the playoffs and captured the CIF-SS Division 13 championship. Last week they won the CIF Southern Regional 7-AA championship.

McBride said he was inspired by the fan support.

“I just said I looked up to the crowd, I’m tearing up, because just the community was so excited for us to be here,” McBride said. “And so just the outreach in the community has been spectacular. They’re all happy for us. Everyone’s taking a little bit of peace off of our run, and that makes me happy.”

Woodbridge freshman quarterback Waylon Stone completed 7 of 20 passes for 76 yards.

“It wasn’t our day today,” said Stone, who finished the season with 1,969 passing yards and eight touchdowns. “I wish we could’ve finished this one out, but (winning the Southern Section title) is definitely a memory. I’ll never forget this team. My freshman year was the craziest experience.”

After forcing a punt on the Lions’ first possession, the Warriors put together drive, moving the ball 55 yards to the Redding Christian 28.

But on a second-and-10 play, cornerback Micah Skinner snatched the momentum right back for the Lions with an interception and 47-yard return.

The Lions converted the turnover into a touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Wyatt Shaw to Skinner.

A second interception by the Warriors, this one by David LaBabera, led to 13-yard touchdown pass from Shaw to Brodie Ogden, giving the Lions a 16-point lead in second quarter after the 2-point conversion.

The Warriors kept themselves in the game by making defensive stands in the second half.

On the first possession of the third quarter, the Lions drove to the Woodbridge 27. The Warriors forced four consecutive incompletions from quarterback Wyatt Shaw, who came in averaging 216 passing yards a game and had 53 touchdown passes.

The Warriors defense came up big again on the Lions’ next possession, this time forcing incompletions on third and fourth downs from the Woodbridge 18.

Woodbridge took over but turned the ball over on downs after driving to the Redding Christian 42.

On the ensuing drive, the Warriors defense was clutch yet again, this time forcing the Lions to punt after gaining only 14 yards.

With time running down in the fourth, Woodbridge drove into the red zone again, but an interception on the Redding Christian 1 ended the drive.

Redding Christian took over with three minutes, 28 seconds remaining and ran out the clock.

“They have good athletes on that side of the ball,” Lions coach Gerald Piper said of the Woodbridge defense. “And just, they just interrupted a lot of our things we wanted to do … so much respect for them.”
