Fountain Valley baseball defeats Marina, remains hopeful it can reach postseason
    • May 2, 2026

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Fountain Valley baseball team won’t earn an automatic berth in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

But Barons coach Gerardo Gonzalez said if his team can finish the regular season strong, qualifying as an at-large selection is a strong possibility.

The Barons solidified their case with an 11-1 victory over Marina in a Sunset League finale Friday at Marina High School.

Fountain Valley (13-14 overall, 7-11 league) has one game remaining in the regular season – a nonleague contest at Warren of Downey on Wednesday.

“It is very important for us,” Gonzalez said of the game against the Bears. “Considering our schedule and out-of-league opponents have been pretty darn good. We were in the Boras (Classic) and then our league. That being said, I think we have a good opportunity to get in.”

Marina (13-15, 8-10) entered the contest tied for third place with Edison.

With the Sunset League being a seven-team league, the top four finishers receive automatic playoff berths, so the Vikings were in regardless of the outcome of Friday’s game.

Edison lost to Corona del Mar 6-5 on Friday, so Marina and Edison finish in a tie for third. The Vikings will enter the playoffs as the Sunset League’s third-place team since they won the season series against the Chargers.

“We’re very excited and it was also cool today to see some guys that didn’t have too many at-bats throughout the year get out there and play,” Marina coach Andrew Bynum said. “Regardless of what the score was today, these next two weeks prior to our first playoff game, we’re going to work really hard and do what we can.”

There were several offensive stars for the Barons on Friday.

Leadoff hitter Josh Grack went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Cleanup hitter Noah McGee was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and No. 9 hitter Luke Scuncio went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Starting pitcher Andrew Harviston was solid on the mound for the Barons, giving up one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Alyis Hernandez allowed one hit and had two strikeouts in two innings of relief for the Barons.

“I was coming in just trying to attack guys,” Harviston said. “I feel like I had nothing to lose so I might as well attack and trust my defense.”
