There are six Orange County schools scheduled to open the 2026 football season in Hawaii this week, and they are all keeping tabs on a powerful storm that is headed toward the Hawaiian Islands.

A potential Tropical Cyclone One-C advisory was issued Wednesday for the Hawaiian Islands starting late Friday. The forecast calls for heavy rainfall, high winds and dangerous surf.

San Clemente, Capistrano Valley, Newport Harbor, San Juan Hills, Villa Park and Edison are scheduled to open their seasons in Hawaii starting on Thursday.

The collection of six teams represents a record number of Orange County teams playing in Hawaii in the same season, county football historian and author Dennis Bateman confirmed.

“We are monitoring (the forecast),” San Juan Hills coach Robert Frith said Wednesday night. “We may move (the game) to (Thursday) if needed.”

“We’ve been on contact with the school we are playing about it,” Capistrano Valley coach Sean Curtis said of the forecast. “They told us (Wednesday) we are still good to go. Storm is expected to hit Saturday.”

San Clemente is scheduled to play Thursday night at Kapa’a on the island of Kauai.

On Friday night, Capistrano Valley, Newport Harbor, San Juan Hills and Villa Park are scheduled to play on the island of Oahu.

Capistrano Valley plays at Damien. Newport Harbor faces Nanakuli. San Juan Hills travels to Castle. Villa Park takes on Farrington.

On Saturday, Edison opens at Iolani on Oahu at 3:15 p.m.

Edison athletic director Rich Boyce said Wednesday night that kickoff could be moved to 9 a.m. or noon.

“All in flux,” he said of the schedule. “Still discussing.”

A few of the Orange County teams posted practice updates from Hawaii on Wednesday that showed blue skies with clouds.

The previous Orange County record for teams playing in Hawaii in the same season was four set in 2022 and 2024, Bateman stated.
