Bishop O’Dowd’s girls soccer team carried the dominant statistics and perfect record. Mater Dei’s girls squad held the confidence of being sharpened by the challenging Trinity League.

In the inaugural CIF State Division I championship Saturday night in Sacramento, the Monarchs’ tough schedule delivered a historic reward.

Addi Doria and Valentina Labuschagne each scored goals early in the second half to lead Mater Dei past previously undefeated and top-ranked Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland 2-0 at Natomas High.

The Monarchs (18-3-9) hoisted the California trophy as the first Orange County girls soccer team to claim a state title.

They accomplished the feat after finishing 1-1-4 in the Trinity League and losing to league rival Santa Margarita in the section finals.

“The Trinity League challenges you in so many different ways,” said Mater Dei coach Matty West, who completed his 25th season. “Each game, it’s a contrast of styles, making adjustments and learning how to recover from intense environments. It required us to learn how to bounce back better in any situation. It definitely prepared us to play our best soccer when it mattered most.”

“This journey to Sacramento means a lot,” West added. “The girls wanted to do something that had never been done before.”

Ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps, Bishop O’Dowd (19-1) entered the final having outscored its opponents 102-4. They featured a college-bound forward with 37 goals.

After a scoreless first half, Doria found the net by lofting a right-footed shot from top, corner of the penalty box over the Bishop O’Dowd goalkeeper in the 45th minute. The junior, who is committed to Nevada, scored off a short pass from the center of the field by Labuschagne.

About 12 minutes later, Labuschagne drew a penalty shot that she converted for her team-leading 23rd goal. The senior is committed to Rice.

While Doria led the offense with four shots on goal in the second half, Mater Dei’s defense impressed in notching a fourth consecutive shutout in the state playoffs.

Sophomore goalie Ella Priest tallied five saves. She highlighted her performance with a diving block with about seven minutes left in the first half.

Mater Dei’s defense also received strong play from Brooke Lalonde, Chloe Mix, Natalie Goodwin, Suna Roberts, Lucy Mendiola and Addy Rodriguez among others.

The Monarchs played without versatile sophomore Kendra Hansen, who is with the under-16 national team in Colombia.

“The girls FaceTimed her after the game,” West said.

Mater Dei earned the third seed for the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs. The Monarchs lost to Santa Margarita 3-0 in the section final before making a charge in state.

They defeated Santa Margarita 2-0 in the CIF SoCal Regional final on two goals in the second half.
