George Klassen has rough start in Angels’ loss to A’s
    • March 16, 2026

THE GAME: The Angels’ four-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-0 Cactus League loss to the Athletics on Monday in Mesa, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander George Klassen gave up three runs in 3⅔ innings. Klassen was shaky in the first, starting with balls on five of his first six pitches. Klassen gave up two runs in the inning, before settling down and putting up zeros in the second and third. “Just rushing a little bit,” Klassen said. “Stepped on the gas a little bit harder than I needed to be. Just a learning experience there that I don’t need to gun it too much, just trust what I have and just throw in the zone there.” He was knocked out in the fourth. Klassen has an outside shot at winning the No. 5 spot in the rotation, but he’s more likely headed to the minors. Klassen has a 3.86 ERA in 11⅔ innings, with 10 strikeouts and five walks. … Right-hander Ryan Zeferjahn pitched 2⅓ scoreless innings, his longest outing of the spring. He hit 98 mph with his fastball. Zeferjahn’s average velocity was down slightly at the start of camp. Zeferjahn has a 3.24 ERA in 8⅓ innings this spring.

HITTING REPORT: Mike Trout got a double when A’s center fielder Denzel Clarke lost a ball in the sun. … Jo Adell singled and doubled. He is hitting .359 (14 for 59) with a 1.067 OPS this spring. … Adam Frazier doubled down the left field line. Frazier, who is competing for the Angels’ starting second base job, is hitting .346 (9 for 26) with an .895 OPS this spring. … The Angels had runners at first and second with no outs in the eighth, down by three, and they didn’t score. Zach Humphreys struck out. Trey Mancini was picked off first. José Siri hit a pop-up.

DEFENSE REPORT: Third baseman Yoán Moncada made a nice backhand stop of a ball headed down the line. Moncada had looked shaky at third in his first few games of the spring, before heading to the World Baseball Classic. … Jeimer Candelario started at second base. He has never played second in a regular-season game, but he finished a game at second last week. … The Angels had a runner picked off, but first baseman Nolan Schanuel made a bad throw to second, for an error.

UP NEXT: Angels (TBD) vs. Cubs (LHP Shota Imanaga), Tuesday, 6:05 p.m. PT, Sloan Park, Mesa, Ariz.
