Canyon boys basketball falls to Bishop Amat in 2OTs in CIF-SS quarterfinals
    • February 18, 2026

ANAHEIM — The Canyon boys basketball team gave top-seeded Bishop Amat all it could handle in their CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday night.

The Comanches led by 21 points early in the third quarter.

But as Canyon coach Nate Harrison noted after the game, which Bishop Amat rallied to win 74-70 in double overtime, the Lancers “are the No. 1 seed for a reason.”

Bishop Amat (26-5) will play Roosevelt in the semifinals on Friday at Roosevelt High in Eastvale. Roosevelt defeated Edison, 74-65, in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

After being held scoreless in the first half, Bishop Amat’s standout sophomore guard Aiden Shaw took over the game. He scored eight points in the third quarter and 12 of his team’s 18 points in the fourth quarter. He then made a huge 3-pointer to tie the score late in the first overtime to send the contest to the second extra period.

“(Shaw) is a great player, man,” Harrison said. “He really put them on his back. Even after all the comeback and all that, we have a three-point lead and he hits the big 3. It just happened so fast. We were thinking maybe we’re fouling, but he’s on us so fast.”

The Comanches looked sharp throughout the first half.

After falling behind 8-2 in the first quarter, the Comanches went on a 20-1 run to take a 20-9 lead in the second quarter. They held the Lancers to one basket from the field in the quarter.

The Comanches built the lead to 21 points early in the third, but when Shaw hit his first basket, it seemed to spark the Lancers (26-5). They went on a 21-9 run to get to within nine points heading into the fourth.

“We had built the big lead and we had a great game plan and when we came out, we executed the game plan perfectly,” Harrison said. “So, we knew once we got them down big that they were kind of going to scrap everything and they were just going to come straight at us. And they came straight at us and we didn’t do a good job with it.”

The Comanches (18-13) were held scoreless from the field in the fourth, while Shaw and his teammates continued surging.

Canyon’s Bryson Taiulu-Allen hit a pair of free throws late in the fourth to send to game to overtime.

The Comaches led, 61-58, late in the first overtime period when Shaw hit the clutch 3-pointer to extend the game for four more minutes.

“Aiden’s shot was special,” Lancers coach Brandon Ertle said. “It really helped us get there.”

Canyon had leads of 63-61 and 65-63 in the second overtime but couldn’t make that one key basket to pull ahead by two possessions.

Andrew Pinto’s basket put Bishop Amat ahead by five with 19.2 seconds left, essentially putting the game away for the Lancers.

“It just kind of became like a really physical battle and it wasn’t really about basketball anymore,” Harrison said. “It was about who could win that physical battle and credit to them. We were here to win this bracket and we gave ourselves a great chance to do that. We feel like we can play with anyone in this division. Sometimes it doesn’t go your way. But games like tonight are why this game is so great.”
