Garden Grove vote center turns into shelter amid hazmat emergency, will not open tomorrow
    • May 22, 2026

A vote center at the Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center will not open on Saturday, May 23, because it has been turned into a shelter for those who had to evacuate due to a possible explosion that could produce a toxic cloud.

The vote center at 13641 Deodara Dr. was scheduled to open on Saturday, along with 38 others around the county, as a place for people to cast ballots in person and receive other election-related assistance.

Because it has become a shelter, it will not open on Saturday as planned, said Registrar of Voters Bob Page. It will be closed until “further notice,” according to the registrar.

Three ballot drop boxes are located within the evacuation area and are not available to voters, Page said.

    They are:

    • The drive-up and walk-up drop box at the Chapman Sports Park at 11700 Knott St., in Garden Grove.

    • The walk-up drop box at the Stanton Branch Library at 7850 Katella Ave., in Stanton.

    • The walk-up drop box at the Korean Martyrs Catholic Center at 7655 Trask Ave., in Westminster.

Page said his office was able to collect ballots from two of the drop boxes on Friday morning before the evacuation area was expanded. And normal security measures are in place to ensure the ballot drop boxes remain secure while they are shuttered, Page said.

None of the other vote centers that will open Saturday is in the evacuation area. They are all scheduled to open at 10 a.m.

Evacuated voters who do not have their ballot can request a replacement one at a vote center.

The nearest vote center to the Garden Grove Sports and Recreation Center is the Miriam Warne Community Building in Westminster, at 14491 Beach Blvd.

A full list of ballot drop boxes and vote centers can be found on the registrar’s website, ocvote.gov/voting.
