Arrests by ICE agents more than tripled in greater L.A. area in 2025; fewer than half of those detained had a criminal record, data shows
    • April 2, 2026

Arrests by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the greater Los Angeles area more than tripled in 2025 compared to the year prior, with fewer than half of those detained having a past criminal record, according to  data published by the Deportation Data Project.

Researchers from UCLA and UC Berkeley obtain federal data through Freedom of Information Act requests, analyze it and publish it online through the project’s website.

Federal immigration officials made 14,458 arrests in the greater Los Angeles area in 2025, compared to 4,684 arrests the year before. About 45% of those arrested in 2025 in the greater L.A. area had criminal convictions and around 15% had pending criminal charges. Around 39% had no criminal charges or convictions, a review of the data shows.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that federal immigration officials have made more than 18,000 arrests in the Los Angeles area since the start of President Trump’s second term in January 2025.

“Many of the individuals that are counted as ‘non-criminals’ are actually terrorists, human rights abusers, gangsters and more; they just don’t have a rap sheet in the U.S.,” DHS said in a statement. “Further, every single one of these individuals committed a crime when they came into this country illegally.

“It is not an accurate description to say they are ‘non-criminals,’” the statement continued. “This deceptive categorization is devoid of reality and misleads the American public. We hear far too much about gang members and criminals’ false sob stories and not enough about their victims.”

Across the country, ICE officials made more than 320,000 arrests last year, up from more than 111,000 arrests in 2024, according to data published by the Deportation Data Project.

This year, through March 10, ICE officials have made more than 2,600 arrests in the greater Los Angeles area.
