Tax returns are due Wednesday. Here’s what to do if you’re scrambling
    • April 14, 2026

Federal and state tax returns are due to be postmarked by midnight, Wednesday, April 15.

For those filing on the last day, California and the Internal Revenue Service offer free filing opportunities online at ftb.ca.gov and irs.gov/filing/individuals/how-to-file. There are myriad professional websites that will file a tax return for a fee, including H&R Block, TurboTax, Jackson Hewitt, among others.

Extensions are available for tax filers, but payments are still due by Wednesday.

To extend a federal tax return, Form 4868 must be filed by April 15. For an online version, go to this IRS page.

California does not require an application to extend a tax return filing. Instead, the Franchise Tax Board offers an automatic extension to taxpayers. Find out more at this FTB website. As with federal returns, any state tax payments are still due April 15.

If you must submit by mail, note that most post offices close by 5 p.m. with a few exceptions open until 6 or 7 p.m.

To help residents get mail dropped after-hours, the U.S. Postal Service offers a variety of self-service kiosks that are open after-hours for postage and mail drop. Be careful to check if USPS staff is stamping mail after hours, otherwise, any postage dropped in the evening will be stamped April 16.

To find those kiosks, search near your ZIP code at tools.usps.com/locations. Use the filter option to search for “self-service kiosks” with hours open on weekdays after 5 p.m.

For forms and frequently asked questions regarding filing, go to irs.gov or ftb.ca.gov/file

If you’ve already filed, taxpayers can check their refund status at 4.irs.gov/wmr
