Cowabunga! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles open their own pizza shop in Santa Monica

They conquered the 1980s and ’90s with their high-kicking ninja skills. Now Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo are heading to the beach and instead of serving up deadline punches they’ll be serving their favorite dish from a new pizza spot that’s opening on the Santa Monica Promenade.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizzeria is a 3,000-square foot space set to open on the Promenade on Saturday, June 20 with a promise to take people back to the day and to serve legit New York style pies.

“We all grew up on it, we’re all huge fans and we all love pizza. And when you think of pizza the turtles are the first thing that comes up along with that retro-nostalgia feel,” said Eric Phan, one of the partners in the new restaurant.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were a hit starting in the late 1980s with a cartoon that featured teenage turtles who became mutants thanks to a radioactive ooze. The brothers were trained in ninjutsu by their rat sensei Splinter and of course proceeded to fight evil, one ninja chop at a time.

When people walk into the restaurant they will be taken back to the 1980s with posters and images of the turtles appearing through the place as music from that era plays on speakers. There are sculptures of the turtles and you pick up your food from the turtles’ van.

While the turtles are the stars here, the pizza is no joke because Phan wanted the pies to be as legit as the turtles’ ninja skills. So the restaurant hired Brooklyn-based Angelo Womack, a veteran pizzaiolo who has worked with acclaimed pizza concepts such as Roberta’s, Oak & Rye, Glide, and Mama’s Boy, as a consultant.

So the dough goes through a fermentation process, the mozzarella is hand stretched and the restaurant even set its water’s pH level to match NYC’s.

“We wanted the food to be taken seriously and not let it be just a themed attraction that happens to serve pizza,” Phan said.
