Chris Abel-designed home on 1-acre Laguna Beach bluff seeks $50M
    • April 22, 2026

A gated coastal compound above Thousand Steps Beach, featuring an “Old Laguna” main house designed by the late architect Chris Abel, is on the market for $50 million.

Marketed as the Cypress Compound, this triple-structure estate offers a total of five bedrooms and nine bathrooms across 5,815 square feet of living space. The structures sit on more than an acre of lush grounds with uninterrupted coastline views and a roped-off, 15-foot-deep private stretch of dry sand at the base of the bluff, according to the listing.

Records viewed at PropertyShark show a September 2021 ownership transfer to a Nevada-based limited liability company. Before the 2021 transfer, the property sold in March 2010 for $7.7 million. The jump in price reflects both the market and improvements.

Rather than overbuilding, the compound centers on a “mindfully renovated” main house designed by Abel, whose family legacy is woven into Laguna Beach history. Built in 1953, the one-bedroom home — built around a Monterey cypress — features a spacious living area, a kitchen overlooking the sand and a wide deck,

Two fully equipped bungalows serve as extensions providing their own kitchens and living areas.

All three structures retain their original footprints, while modern amenities include a 45-foot infinity-edge pool, a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen, an open-air cabana and a quarter-size basketball court.

A double-gated staircase with an observation deck leads to the beach below.

John Stanaland of The Agency holds the listing.

Abel famously created wood-clad, post-and-beam homes on steep Laguna Beach hillsides. Inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, his designs integrated with natural elements like the cypress tree on this property.

Large windows and craftsmanship are also signatures of his work.

The late architect died in October 2004, 10 days shy of his 81st birthday.
