Yorba Linda boys volleyball dominates all areas in sweep of Sonora
    • March 27, 2026

YORBA LINDA — The Yorba Linda boys volleyball team controlled all facets of the game as it swept Sonora, 25-15, 25-10, 25-17, in a Freeway League match Thursday at Yorba Linda High School.

Yorba Linda (18-5, 3-0) stopped a Raiders team that had won seven matches in a row and had lost only one set during that stretch.

“It was nice because we were finally disciplined,” Yorba Linda coach Carson Gonzalez said. “We were disciplined at the net, getting a lot of blocks, and then back out, diffing a lot of balls. A lot of times, we are coming out with a lot of wins, but it is still a bit too tight.”

By making good serves, the Mustangs kept the Raiders (11-2, 1-1) from setting up plays at the net throughout the match, Gonzalez said.

“Putting pressure from the service line and taking them out of their system was nice,” the coach said.

Part of Yorba Linda’s strategy was keeping Sonora outside hitter Orion Stephens from getting kill opportunities. Stephens still finished with 11 kills to lead the Raiders.

Pierce Beeding led Yorba Linda with four of his team’s 11 blocks.

“I watch the player very carefully and I like to see where he swings and then I see if he is leaning to whatever side of the court,” Beeding said. “I watched very carefully on their hitting lines (during warmups),”

Freshman R.J. Bollin led Yorba Linda with 10 kills and Ethan Yeh served three of the Mustangs’ eight aces.

“I felt like they had a lot of big hitters so I just wanted to go out there and compete more,” Bollin said. “So, every time I swung, I just swung as hard as I could.”

The Mustangs closed out the first set on an 8-3 run.

One ace each from Yeh, Willem Bollin and Preston Cheng and three kills from Bollin helped the Mustangs win the set.

In the second set, Yorba Linda put the Raiders in a deep hole right away, opening up the set on a 9-1 run.

Back-to-back kills from Austin Kuroda and Logan Kim followed by an ace from Peitron Achrem gave the Mustangs a 16-4 lead.

The Raiders came out more competitive in the third set.

The score was 8-8 when the Mustangs went on an 8-3 run to pull ahead by five and didn’t let the Raiders get any closer from there.
