Senior Moments: What the pink moon saw after a day full of wonders
    • April 12, 2026

The moon tickled me pink and that’s no fooling.

April 1 may have been April Fool’s Day, but a few other things were going on.

NASA launched Artemis II, the first mission to the moon in more than 50 years, sending four astronauts on the ride of a lifetime.

The full pink moon lit up the night sky with a dazzling display just hours before the launch to the far side of the moon.

“Mr. Moon, you look like you’re wearing rouge,” I said as he passed by my garden window. “What’s the occasion?”

He explained that the pink moon is named after creeping phlox and other pink flowers that bloom this time of year. Although the moon does not actually turn pink, it is a symbol of new growth and renewal.

“The world can sure use that now,” I mused.

In his wisdom, Mr. Moon noted that we always need renewal. It’s a sign of hope that nature structures for us.

There are many names for the pink moon. One of my favorites is “the Sucker Moon,” an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe term noting that the sucker fish that returns to streams and lakes this time of year to spawn. The belief is that these fish come back from the spirit world to purify the bodies of water and all the creatures living in them. It’s such a positive thought.

I asked the moon if he was excited about meeting the astronauts. He said he is excited that moon launches and astronauts are part of our world.

“What about baseball?” I asked, changing the subject because my baseball-loving brother had reminded me that the moon launch date was also the opening day of Major League Baseball,

“Did you make it to the Dodger game?” I asked the now pink moon.

“You know I can only make the night games, right?” he joked.

“But I did visit the seders on this first night of Passover,” he added. “What a day this has been.”
