Fullerton’s Eric Levitt heads to San Bernardino for city manager role
    • June 5, 2025

San Bernardino now has a city manager, after the council voted Wednesday night, June 4, to appoint one formally and end the role being served by an interim.

Eric Levitt has been appointed to the position. Levitt will be stepping away from his current role as city manager of Fullerton, which he’s had since 2021, and starting in San Bernardino Aug. 4.

“I appreciate very much that I’m going to be a part of your team, and I think it’s important that we come together collaboratively with the community,” Levitt said during the meeting. “ I think it is important to work with the community and (for me) to understand all eight of your (the council’s) values.”

San Bernardino has had at least four city managers in the past two years. In recent months,  the city has been operating with an acting city manager since the departure of Rochelle Clayton, who vacated the position in February. She was hired as city manager in Barstow. Days later the council appointed Tanya Romo acting city manager during a special meeting.

The decision Wednesday night was almost unanimous. All but one council member voted in favor of appointing Levitt. Treasure Ortiz voted no.

“Nobody can come into this city and be successful as a city manager with the current political climate because it is happening where you cannot see it. That’s why there’s turnover,” Ortiz said during the meeting. “Now, we have an opportunity to do something different. To build a foundation and to set goals and objectives. But that’s not gonna happen.”

Ortiz said she felt the selection process was rushed, as the council body held at least two emergency meetings without her presence or Mayor Helen Tran’s approval to proceed with an appointment.

The nationwide search ended up bringing them back to Southern California. Levitt has been a city manager in various cities both in California and out of state for 18 years before he took on the position in Fullerton role, according to a city news release.

He will begin his new role with San Bernardino Aug. 4, with a starting salary of $333,000.

Levitt will also receive a $6,000 moving fee as an incentive to move to the city and says that he plans to relocate in the coming months.
