NFL draft: Chargers select Miami DE Akheem Mesidor with 1st-round pick
    • April 24, 2026

EL SEGUNDO — The Chargers selected University of Miami defensive end Akheem Mesidor with their first-round pick in the NFL draft on Thursday, addressing a need for additional depth beyond Khalil Mack, a likely future Hall of Famer, and Tuli Tuipulotu, a first-time Pro Bowl selection.

Mesidor, 25, had 52.5 tackles for losses, including 35.5 sacks during his college career. He’ll get a chance to learn on the job with Mack and Tuipulotu acting as his mentors and then get a chance to move into a starter’s role once Mack, 36, decides to walk away from the game.

He started his career at West Virginia in 2020 and then transferred to Miami for the 2022 season. He played only two games for the Hurricanes in ’23 after tearing ligaments in both feet, requiring surgery. He made 13 starts in ’24 and 15 this past season.

Mesidor’s 12.5 sacks were the third-most in FBS in the 2025 season.

The draft continues with Rounds 2 and 3 conducted on Friday and the fourth through seventh rounds set for Saturday. The Chargers have picks in the second (55th overall), third (86th), fourth (123th) and sixth (204) rounds, but do not have picks in the fifth or seventh rounds.
