St. John Bosco baseball has another productive outing against Santa Margarita
    • April 16, 2026

BELLFLOWER — Shortstop James Clark had three of the St. John Bosco baseball team’s 14 hits and drove in two runs Wednesday in an 8-1 win over Santa Margarita in the Trinity League.

The Braves (15-5, 7-1), who have won the first two games of the series with the Eagles and four in a row overall, got two hits apiece from five other players. All nine batters in the Bosco lineup reached base at least once.

“It’s definitely great,” Clark said. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but us being able to kind of rally together is definitely huge.”

Bosco scored three runs in the first inning, two in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

“Prior to this week, we’ve been facing some outstanding arms — at any level,” Braves coach Andy Rojo said. “I think we’ve faced like four or five guys that have hit 92 to 96 miles per hour the last two, three weeks. Just keep pressing upon our guys we’re a pretty good team, compete in the box and good things start happening.”

Santa Margarita (14-7, 3-5), which struck out 15 times in Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to the Braves, was unable to do much damage despite St. John Bosco starting pitcher Griffin Tagliaferri’s early command issues.

The first three Eagles hitters reached to load the bases, but Tagliaferri allowed just a one-out, run-scoring sacrifice fly to left fielder Luke Blanchard.

Braves catcher Aaron Garcia ended the threat by picking a runner off third base.

“(Tagliaferri) did a good job of minimizing (the damage) in that first inning to give us a chance,” Rojo said.

Bosco leadoff hitter Jaden Jackson tied the game in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to center field off Santa Margarita starter Noah Darnell.

Moises Razo and Jhett Ohira tacked on an RBI double and RBI single, respectively, to give the Braves a 3-1 lead after one inning.

Tagliaferri ran into trouble again in the fourth and exited after the first two batters reached base. He allowed one run on two hits but walked three.

Bosco’s Brayden Krakowski collected a pair of strikeouts and induced a groundout to Clark to preserve the 3-1 lead.

Krakowski worked two scoreless innings and finished with three strikeouts thanks to an effective sweeper. He worked around allowing two walks and a hit.

“The idea was just to get ahead (in the count) and trust what I’ve been doing,” Krakowski said. “Sometimes I’ll get on top of (the sweeper) and I’ll break into the zone. … I had it working today.”

Santa Margarita produced just four hits. Catcher Warren Gravely IV had a single and walked twice.

Eagles coach Chris Malec credited the Braves for being a “good, gritty, veteran ballclub” that was unfazed by pressure moments.

“Most of these kids have been in super pressure environments,” Malec said, “and just get comfortable working in those bases-loaded situations and being able to stay calm, stay composed and navigate their way out of it.”

The Braves busted the game open in the fifth inning with Clark’s two-run single off Eagles reliever Mason Cascardo.

The left-handed Clark took a hanging pitch on the outer half of the plate and poked it back up the middle for his third hit and an 8-1 lead.

“Just stayed back long enough and was able to work my hands to get the ball up the middle,” said Clark, who finished with two singles, a double and two runs scored.

The teams will wrap the series up Friday afternoon at Santa Margarita at 2:30 p.m.

Bosco has allowed just two runs over the first two games of the series and just three over its last four games overall.

“I think we’re pitching awesome,” Krakowski said. “I think us limiting the free passes have been leading to our success.”
