    • March 3, 2026

Skippylongstocking will try to solidify his status as a top older horse on both coasts when he returns to California to run in the Santa Anita Handicap on Saturday.

The 7-year-old, trained in Florida by Saffie Joseph, won the Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita last May and sprang a 21-1 surprise in the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park near Miami in January. He’s No. 4 in this week’s National Thoroughbred Racing Association rankings behind Sovereignty, Forever Young and Nysos.

From the rail out, here’s the field of seven set Monday for the $300,000, Grade I Santa Anita Handicap at 1¼ miles: Midnight Mammoth, assigned 119 pounds, Armando Ayuso riding; Getaway Car, 120, Juan Hernandez; Just a Touch, 121, Florent Geroux; Vodka Vodka, 116, Kent Desormeaux; Skippylongstocking, 125, Tyler Gaffalione; British Isles, 119, Diego Herrera, Westwood, 121, Kazushi Kimura.

Brant, the Del Mar Futurity winner who ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, will make his 3-year-old debut in Saturday’s $200,000, Grade II San Felipe Stakes, a 1-1/16-mile race with seven horses seeking Kentucky Derby qualifying points: Flashy Fritz, 120, Adrian Escobedo; Start the Ride, 122, Ayuso; Secured Freedom, 120, Kimura; Brant, 120, Geroux; Potente, 120, Hernandez; So Happy, 120, Mike Smith; Robusta, 120, Emisael Jaramillo.

The 11-race card starts at noon.
