Orange Lutheran baseball edges Gahr with walk-off win in Boras Classic
    • April 9, 2026

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — CJ Weinstein hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning for Orange Lutheran in a 2-1 win over Gahr in the second round of the Boras Classic Southern Section tournament Wednesday at JSerra High.

Close wins and walk-off wins have become commonplace for Orange Lutheran (10-3) this season. Wednesday was the third walk-off win for the Lancers and they are 5-0 in games decided by one run.

“They keep finding ways,” Orange Lutheran coach RJ Farrell said. “I’d prefer it if we weren’t in one-run games all the time. But I think it’s a good test for us, prepping us for the playoffs. They just keep competing.”

“We just never give up,” Weinstein, a LSU signee, said. “The walk-offs happen because we believe in each other, are not doing too much and just playing the game.”

Orange Lutheran, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, will play the winner of Wednesday night’s game between JSerra and Aquinas in the semifinals Thursday at 6 p.m. at JSerra High. Tennessee signee and MLB draft prospect Gary Morse will start the game for Orange Lutheran.

Angel Gonzalez led off the eighth inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Ricardo Hurtado and Brady Murrietta drew consecutive walks to load the bases for Weinstein’s single.

The game was a pitchers’ duel between three Division I signees prior to the eighth inning.

LSU signee Cooper Sides didn’t have his best stuff for Orange Lutheran, but arguably had his best start of the season before leaving the game in the sixth inning. Sides allowed one hit through the first five innings with four strikeouts and retired 13 of 15 batters at one point.

“It wasn’t his best stuff today but I think it showed the competitor in him,” Farrell said. “He just kept going and got us into the sixth. His stuff is electric, he just wasn’t feeling it today. But he competed and gave us a chance to win.”

Gahr finally got to Sides in the sixth inning. Cal State Northridge signee Nathan Guangorena doubled to lead off the inning and subsequently scored on a run-scoring triple by USC signee Bryce Morrison to tie the game at one.

TCU signee Marcus Greis relieved Sides and escaped the jam with the score still tied at one. Gahr attempted a “suicide squeeze” bunt, but the hitter missed the pitch which caused Morrison to be tagged out at home to end the scoring threat.

Greis pitched three scoreless innings to get the win and made a spectacular defensive play where he fielded a sharp ground ball through his legs and turned a double play.

Oregon signee Jake Ourique entered the game with a 0.83 ERA for Gahr (9-8-1) and was excellent again on Wednesday. Ourique allowed one run in seven innings with four hits and six strikeouts.

He has allowed one earned run or fewer in all six of his starts this season with 39 strikeouts in 32⅓ innings.

The Lancers were familiar with Ourique after facing him in the regular-season finale last season. Ourique allowed three unearned runs in 4⅔ innings in that game which the Lancers won 4-3.

“He was commanding the outer half and had a good understanding of the strike zone today, kind of expanding it,” Farrell said of Ourique. “His slider is a real pitch and when you’re facing a guy like that, you’re in for a day. I thought our guys did a pretty good job of staying with the plan we had against him.”

Gonzalez had two doubles for the Lancers while Weinstein and Hurtado added one each. Weinstein drove in both runs for Orange Lutheran.

The Lancers had a dominant win over Fountain Valley in the first round of the Boras Classic on Monday in a game in which 10 different players got a hit.

Gahr also had a dominant win in the first round with an 11-1 rout of Patrick Henry. The Gladiators will play the loser of Wednesday’s game between JSerra and Aquinas at Mater Dei on Thursday.
