Inglewood football falls to Edison on late TD in Division 3 quarterfinals
    • November 15, 2025

INGLEWOOD — With the rain pouring down for most of the game, the Inglewood football team leaned on their defense to try to protect a four-point lead against visiting Edison since early in the second quarter.

Time and time again the Sentinels defense was up for that challenge.

However, on a fourth-and-goal play from the 5-yard line with less than 30 seconds remaining, Edison quarterback Sam Thomson caught the Sentinels defense with a quick snap and found Maddox Thomas open in the flat for the game-winning touchdown with 17.7 seconds remaining to lift the Chargers to a 9-7 win in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 quarterfinals.

With five minutes remaining, Inglewood’s Iroc Cordova intercepted a Thomson pass, giving the Sentinels the ball back with 4:45 remaining. Facing a third-and-12, Allen Wilson broke a 22-yard run, but two plays later a fumbled snap gave the Chargers new life and the ball at the Inglewood 49 with 2:48 remaining. It was Inglewood’s only turnover of the night, but it proved to be costly.

“Obviously it was a rough game,” Inglewood quarterback Lincoln Jahn said. “We could have won, but just a few mistakes. I’ll put that last one on me. Our defense was incredible, we leaned on them all night and they were amazing. The offense just had to do more out there.”

Inglewood got the first break of the game, recovering the muffed opening kickoff at the Edison 31. Four plays later running back Austyn Tillman looked to have scored the game’s first touchdown on a 16-yard run. However, the officials ruled that Tillman had gone out of bounds just before crossing the goal line. A bad snap moved the Sentinels back to the 12 and then on a fourth-and-goal from 2, a bad snap forced Jahn to fall on the ball back at the 5.

Inglewood would get the ball back after a punt. Marlon Watson gained 25 yards on three rushes, setting up Semaj Welch’s 2-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

Edison answered with a 23-yard field goal by Crue Bradshaw with 4:02 left in the first half to cut the lead to 7-3 for Inglewood.

Neither team would score again until Edison’s game-winning score.

“It was a blessing (the fumble recovery) for us to bounce back from our offensive struggles,” Thomson said. “The play came in quick and didn’t really seem like they (Inglewood) had their responsibilities in check and we ended up having an open running back and that was the game. It was amazing as we had been battling all game and we ended up on the right side of this one.”

Edison will face Palos Verdes in the semifinals. The teams met Sept. 12 with Edison winning 21-20.

“Our defense played well enough to win this game,” Inglewood coach Mil’von James said. “They limited this team to virtually nothing offensively until that final drive …Fourth-and-5, with less than 25 second and the clock running, I’ll take my team. I probably could have called a time out there, but I didn’t want to give them a chance to set up for a final play.

“All in all I’m excited what my kids did. They played a hell of a game. It just didn’t work out.”

Jahn echoed his coach’s thoughts. “We’re just going to get better (next year) and not let this happen again. We know how bad this feels and we want to be on the other side next year.”
