Brea Olinda softball ties game with grand slam, beats El Dorado in extra innings
    • March 18, 2026

PLACENTIA — The Brea Olinda softball team trailed by four runs and was down to its final two outs in a Freeway League game against El Dorado on Tuesday.

Brea Olinda’s Makayla Gulfin then changed the game with one swing, belting a grand slam over the fence in right field to tie the score and ultimately send the contest to extra innings.

Then in the eighth, a single from Ashley Gledhill combined with an error allowed Sophia Luarca to score from second and the Wildcats came away with a 7-6 victory in eight innings at El Dorado High School.

The game was the Freeway League opener for the Wildcats (7-4, 1-0) and the second league game for the Golden Hawks (7-3, 1-1). Both teams are ranked in the Orange County Top 25: Brea Olinda at No. 12 and El Dorado at No. 17.

“Our lineup is pretty stacked from one to nine,” Brea Olinda coach Eli Camarillo said. “I rely on all my girls to at least make some type of effort to come back in the game. My girls are a great group. I’ve been coaching them for the past two seasons and they’re just a joy to watch.”

Brea Olinda was trailing, 6-0, after five innings before Callie Hammond singled home two runs for the Ladycats in the sixth, setting the stage for Gulfin’s game-tying grand slam.

Gulfin said she knew the ball was going to leave the yard from the second it left her bat.

“I was really just thinking that I need to hit the ball hard and forward because that’s something I’ve been really working on,” Gulfin said. “I just really wanted to just help my team out, and I knew in that moment that I put in all the work this past week and I just knew I was capable of it and I just wanted to stay confident in myself.”

The Wildcats might not have had the opportunity to come back if it wasn’t for the pitching of Maya Jamero, who entered in the sixth and allowed only one hit in three innings of work.

Jamero retired the El Dorado batters in order in the sixth and allowed a two-out single in the seventh.

El Dorado had a batter reach base on an error with one out in the eighth but Jamero retired the next two batters to secure the victory.

“I know what situation I’m in,” Jamero said. “I just have to calm down and then I got it. I’m thinking to just not let them score. I’ve just got to hold them and give my team a chance to come back.”

El Dorado’s Amy Cornelius and Emily Yoon each singled home a run in the fourth and the Hawks scored another run on a double steal to take a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Finnley Dustin drove in two runs with a double and Remmington Marquez singled home a run to make the score 6-0.

Kayla Davenport had three singles for the Hawks.
