    Kentucky Derby next for at least two California horses

    So Happy and Potente are the California-based horses with Kentucky Derby berths secured after major qualifying races for the May 2 classic were completed Saturday.

    Mark Glatt-trained So Happy and Bob Baffert-trained Potente finished first and second in the Santa Anita Derby.

    Jeff Mullins’ Intrepido, third at Santa Anita, can get into the Kentucky Derby if at least four horses currently in the field of 20 are withdrawn. Post positions will be set April 25.

    Michael McCarthy’s Stark Contrast, 17th on the list after going to Kentucky and finishing second in the Jeff Ruby, is one of several qualified 3-year-olds reported likely to pass up the Derby and run in other races.

    • Santa Anita doesn’t race this week before opening its Hollywood Meet on April 17.
