Fullerton softball’s big lead nearly isn’t enough against Brea Olinda
    • March 13, 2026

FULLERTON — The Fullerton High softball team has put up crooked numbers multiple times this season and has done it against good teams.

The Indians, ranked No. 3 in Orange County, did it again in a 9-7 nonleague victory over No. 14 Brea Olinda on Thursday at Fullerton High School.

Fullerton (10-1) defeated No. 4 Orange Lutheran, 9-2, on March 7, No. 6 El Modena, 11-3, on Feb. 25 and No. 10 Canyon, 6-1, on Feb. 28.

“Our offense is deep,” Fullerton coach Trevor Holton said. “And we’re missing two senior starters. We’ve done a good job scoring from the bottom of the lineup, just one through nine. If the top line doesn’t get it done, the bottom comes through.

While nearly every player in Fullerton’s lineup contributed in some way against the Wildcats, the top four hitters accounted for most of the offense.

Leadoff hitter Haley Brock went 3 for 4, scored two runs and belted a three-run home run that was the key hit in an eight-run third inning for the Indians.

The home run was the second of he season for Brock, who leads the Indians with 12 RBIs.

Brock led the team last season with 24 RBIs.

“Honestly, every time I hit a home run, it’s always for my team,” Brock said. “Specifically, against (Brea Olinda). We had something to prove against them because they came in obviously hotter than we did, so I just wanted to try to boost my team up and help our energy.”

Sophomore Kaylyn Yi, who bats second, went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The No. 3 hitter in the lineup, Soleil Luna, went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, and freshman Kaylee Mathews, the cleanup hitter, went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Luna, a UNLV signee, played for the Wildcats last season before transferring to Fullerton for her senior season.

“I feel like once our bats are hot, they’re hot,” Luna said. “They don’t go down. They don’t flatline.”

The Wildcats didn’t go down without a fight.

Fullerton had a 9-1 lead when Sophia Luarca hit a grand slam with two outs in the fifth to get the Wildcats within four runs.

Holly Yerkish led off the seventh with a home run to cut the deficit to three runs, and Luarca drove in her fifth run of the game with a single with one out.

Fullerton starting pitcher Kaylee Mathews had been taken out of the game to start the seventh, but Holton put her back in to try to shut down Brea Olinda’s rally.

With Luarca on second with one out and the tying run at the plate, Mathews retired the next two hitters to secure the victory.
