University’s boys tennis team completed its version of a marathon match Monday to avenge an earlier loss against Corona del Mar, the No. 1-ranked squad in the CIF Southern Section.

After the schools tied 9-9 on sets and 78-78 on games, host University won a super tiebreaker 4-2 to punctuate a nonleague match that lasted more than four hours.

“A classic tennis match,” University coach John Kessler said. “Two top teams, high level, clean cheering and a lot of excitement.”

On Feb. 26, the Sea Kings (17-1) defeated University — the two-time defending state champion — 13-5 in a nonleague match at Corona del Mar.

The loss fueled No. 2 University (14-3) to bounce back Monday, Kessler said.

With the teams tied on sets and games, all players in singles and doubles returned to the court to play a tiebreaker to seven points.

University won twice in singles and twice in the doubles.

University’s JiHyuk Im and Gavin Yue claimed their tiebreakers while the doubles teams of Arjun Appa and Langston Walter-Wu, and Reid Hashimoto and Tyler Chandler took their doubles.

“They have worked really hard to claw their way back up the rankings,” Kessler said of his players. “We still have a lot of work ahead of us but I am really proud of them.”

Corona del Mar’s Ivan Pflueger swept his singles matches 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 and won his tiebreaker.

On Tuesday, University plays host to Northwood with a chance to claim its 20th consecutive Pacific Coast League title.
