    21 debut novels coming out in spring 2026 to add to your TBR list

    This year has seen the return of some serious literary heavyweights, with new novels already out from authors including Tayari Jones, David Guterson, George Saunders and Gabriel Tallent, as well as new ones coming from writers such as Maria Semple, Colson Whitehead, Ann Patchett, Elizabeth Strout, Amitav Ghosh, and Emily St. John Mandel, to name just a few.

    But while it’s undeniably satisfying to crack open the latest offering from a beloved author, there’s also something special about checking out novels from new and emerging writers.

    This spring will bring a solid slate of debut novels from authors who are trying their hand at long-form fiction for the first time — here are 21 of the most promising ones for you to either buy or preorder at your favorite local indie bookstore.

    “The Valley of Vengeful Ghosts”

    Author: Kim Fu

    What It’s About: Seattle-based author Fu delighted fans of offbeat fiction with her 2022 short story collection “Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century.” Her eerie sensibility is on full display in her first novel, which follows a woman, grieving the death of her mother, who moves into a house that may be haunted.

    “Gunk”

    Author: Saba Sams

    What It’s About: Author Sams was already something of a literary celebrity in the U.K., having received honors from Granta and the Sunday Times. She has earned rave reviews for her first novel in which the lives of two women who work in a seedy Brighton nightclub intersect.

    “The Oldest Bitch Alive”

    Author: Morgan Day

    What It’s About: If you can’t handle books about pet mortality, you might want to skip this one — but it would be a shame. Debut author Day’s beautiful novel follows the last days of Gelsomina, a French bulldog who learns she is dying after she eats parasitic worms.

    “The Jills”

    Author: Karen Parkman

    What It’s About: Football fans have to wait until September for the NFL season to start, but this book could be a fun way to kill time until then. The thriller follows Virginia, a Buffalo Bills cheerleader, who is determined to find the missing Jeanine, another member of the team’s cheer squad.

    “Whidbey”

    Author: T Kira Madden

    What It’s About: Madden’s 2019 book “Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls” was one of the best memoirs in recent U.S. history, and her first novel is just as excellent. The book follows three women whose lives are upended following the murder of a man they all knew.

    “American Han”

    Author: Lisa Lee

    What It’s About: L.A. author Lee, who appeared in the Book Pages Q&A last week, has racked up an impressive literary résumé, with her short fiction appearing in some of the country’s most prestigious journals. Her first novel tells the story of siblings Jane and Kevin, who fail to live up to their parents’ exacting standards; the family is thrown into turmoil when Kevin goes missing.

    “Hexes of the Deadwood Forest”

    Author: Agnieszka Szpila, translated by Scotia Gilroy

    What It’s About: Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk took notice of her fellow Polish author Szpila, who makes her literary debut with a novel about Anna Frenza, an oil company CEO who loses her job and is hospitalized after being filmed having a sexual encounter with a tree. Needless to say, this isn’t your ordinary literary fiction.

    “Tailbone”

    Author: Che Yeun

    What It’s About: The powerful first novel from Yeun, set in South Korea, follows a teenage girl who flees her abusive home and moves to a boarding home, where she befriends another girl whose relationship with her benefactor is threatened by the 2008 financial crisis.

    “Arab American Blues”

    Author: Paul Aziz Zarou

    What It’s About: L.A. author Zarou makes his literary debut with this coming-of-age novel, which tells the story of Michael Haddad, the son of Palestinian immigrants living in 1960s New York, whose life is affected by a personal tragedy as well as the social changes that rock America.

    “A Private Man”

    Author: Stephanie Sy-Quia

    What It’s About: California native Sy-Quia is a familiar name to poetry aficionados: her collection “Amnion” has won high acclaim from critics and readers alike. She steps into the fiction world with this novel about the romantic relationship between a Catholic priest and a lay theology teacher over several decades.

    “Liar’s Dice”

    Author: Juliet Faithfull

    What It’s About: Massachusetts-based writer Faithfull’s poignant first novel tells the story of Dolores, a 12-year-old girl growing up in Brazil whose life is forever changed when her ailing identical twin sister is sent to live in a hospital in London. As she grows up, Dolores becomes determined to find her twin, who may or may not be dead.

    “Offseason”

    Author: Avigayl Sharp

    What It’s About: The book world is buzzing at an unusually high volume over this semi-comic novel from Sharp, which has drawn endorsements from Elizabeth McCracken, Catherine Lacey, and Michael Chabon. The book follows a delusional boarding school teacher who returns to her hometown and encounters the person who may have been the one who sent her life into disarray.

    “Abundance”

    Author: Hafeez Lakhani

    What It’s About: The first novel from Lakhani, who has already been honored by PEN America and the Center for Fiction, tells the story of a 60-year-old Muslim woman in Florida who will die without an organ transplant, but resists the procedure; her husband enlists their children to get her to change her mind.

    “Homebound”

    Author: Portia Elan

    What It’s About: Fans of Gabrielle Zevin’s bestselling “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” might want to check out this novel from Bay Area author Elan, about a 19-year-old woman in 1983 Cincinnati, determined to finish designing the computer game that her late uncle left her to complete.

    “A Zoom With a View”

    Author: Jess Cannon

    What It’s About: Cozy mystery fans will want to pick up the first novel from the pseudonymous Cannon, which tells the story of Leo, a woman who moves from New York to her hometown of Blue Oak, Texas, and stumbles upon the corpse of a social media influencer who also happens to be one of her real estate agent godmother’s professional rivals.

    “Mercy Hill”

    Author: Hannah Thurman

    What It’s About: Although it’s set in the 1990s and early 2000s, Thurman’s first novel couldn’t be more timely: It addresses the rash of closings of state mental health hospitals, a problem that continues today. The novel follows three sisters growing up on the grounds of one such institution in North Carolina, where their mother is head of psychiatry.

    “Seek Immediate Shelter”

    Author: Vincent Yu

    What It’s About: In Yu’s first novel, the residents of Beckitt, Massachusetts, prepare for the worst after receiving an alert about an incoming ballistic missile, and make decisions they come to regret after a follow-up message reveals that the first one was sent in error.

    “Nerve Damage”

    Author: Annakeara Stinson

    What It’s About: L.A. author Stinson’s debut follows Clarice, a woman who breaks up with her cheating boyfriend, P.T., who then begins stalking her. She gets a restraining order against him and moves from New York to California, but soon starts to believe that P.T. hasn’t given up terrorizing her yet.

    “All Them Dogs”

    Author: Djamel White

    What It’s About: Readers in Ireland can’t stop talking about this first novel from Dublin author White, which tells the story of Tony Ward, a young gangster returning to Ireland from a self-imposed exile in England, and who takes a job working for Flute Walsh, a handsome gang enforcer who awakens confusing feelings in Tony.

    “Murder at the Hotel Orient”

    Author: Alessandra Ranelli

    What It’s About: Ranelli’s mystery novel follows Sterling Lockwood, an American who works as a concierge at the titular Vienna hotel, and puts her sleuth hat on after the murder of two guests. Ranelli’s book was supported by the actual hotel, which gave her full access to the entire building, including its secret rooms.

    “Hope House”

    Author: Joe Bond

    What It’s About: From essential indie publisher Hub City Press, this debut novel from New Orleans writer Bond tells the story of a group of teenage boys living in a treatment home for troubled young people, all of whom long to find connection and purpose in their lives.
