    • March 15, 2026

The following 130 students have been nominated for the Pacific Symphony Award for Instrumental Music by teachers and private instructors representing Orange County high schools and arts organizations.

Each nominee is listed below with an endorsement from their nominating teacher. When available, links to the student’s work are also included.

    Brian Anesi

“What doesn’t Brian do? Brian has been in orchestra all three years and is one of our first violins in our top orchestra for the past two years. However, he also plays jazz piano and is comfortable in both genres. Probably one of the finest musical minds I’ve encountered in my 39 years of teaching, Brian always is playing with the music (the music doesn’t play him). His creativity just flows with what ever he is performing on.” — Jim Kollias, Beckman High School

    Josue Angel

“Josue Angel is an outstanding instrumental performer inside of the Costa Mesa High School program. Not only is he a french horn player, but he also does tuba, guitar, bass guitar, is the first chair cello in the orchestra, trumpet, percussion, and much more! He is always striving to learn new instruments and jam out to music with his friends. He is the true embodiment of a performer. Every year he’s signed up for as many ensembles as he could possibly fit in his schedule because of his passion for performance. I can see Josue being a star musician in his future.” — Andrew Brannon, Costa Mesa High School

    Wiley Ashley

“Wiley Ashley has been a joy to teach over the last few years. He has excelled as a tuba and sousaphone player, and was recently featured as a bass trombone soloist with our Jazz Band. Wiley has consistently offered himself as a mentor and teacher for younger players at our school and the local Junior High Schools. He started our regular instrument cleaning and repair days and will make a great band director one day.” — Joshua Parsons, John F. Kennedy High School

Archie brings a positive and level-headed leadership quality to our high achieving percussion section.” — James Charrette, Brea Olinda High School

    Arianne Bruckner

“She pairs exceptional musicianship with genuine leadership and a spirit of curiosity that lifts every ensemble she joins. A cornerstone of our concert band, concert band honors, and jazz ensemble, she moves seamlessly from section playing to featured parts with tone, time, and taste. Beyond the classroom, Arianne deepens her craft in saxophone choir and saxophone quartet, and she thrives in our improvisation-forward Tartan Jam, where her ears, instincts, and collaboration shine.” — Chris Carbajal, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School

    Sarah Chan

“Sarah is a budding superstar here at Beckman High School where she has been a member of the orchestra program for three years, the last two in our top orchestra. She has earned Certificate of Merit Level 10 on piano and Certificate of Merit Level 8 on the cello.” — Jim Kollias, Beckman High School

    Serena Chan

“Serena Chan is an experienced musician, having started piano at age five and the violin at eight years old. Since then, she has continued playing these two instruments, stopping the piano in 2022 to pursue her passion in the violin. Serena has earned accolades away from Beckman as well earning CM Level 9 with State Honors on piano and CM Level 8 with State Honors with Convention Invitation, and was a Satori Competition Winner.” — Jim Kollias, Beckman High School

His accolades are that he is the only 4 student member of our Jazz Ensemble (member since his freshman year), has served as our Drum Major for two years, and has marched percussion in our Indoor Drumline each of the past three years as well. He has matured into a good leader to his peers and he is well respected as a musician across the board.” — Troy Trimble, Fullerton Union High School

Across four years, he has been a driving force in marching band, intermediate band, concert band, jazz ensemble, and jazz ensemble honors, and a reliable presence in the house band for the Tartan Revue and at Tartan jam sessions. On concert snare, he is among the finest I’ve had at St. Margaret’s — precise, musical, and disciplined — while on drum set he brings a deep pocket, a sensitive ear, and an instinct for serving the music. In the Tartan Revue alone, he moves authentically across rock, pop, hip‑hop, musical theater, and jazz, reading at a professional level and adapting instantly to the needs of the moment.” — Chris Carbajal, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School

While his primary focus is the alto saxophone, he has demonstrated professional-level proficiency across the entire saxophone family, including tenor, soprano, and baritone. His exceptional technical facility and mature sound have made him a cornerstone of our top ensembles, including the SAHS Marching Saints, the advanced wind ensemble, and the SAHS jazz band. Julian’s dedication to the musical arts extends to the theater, where he has been an essential member of the pit orchestras for both our summer and spring musical productions.” ∞ Mark Santos, Santa Ana High School

The following year, Parker successfully auditioned as principal trombonist of our most rigorous wind band and jazz ensemble, which he maintained for three consecutive years. He sought opportunities to challenge himself musically and began connecting with university professors and orchestral trombonists to better prepare for college and beyond. George Xie

“George plays both piano and string bass in our top orchestra, but while he has been playing piano for fourteen years, though you wouldn’t know from listening to him, he’s only been playing bass for the past three. George auditioned into our Philharmonic as a pianist, but as we perform a great deal of music that doesn’t include piano, he decided to pick up bass in order to still participate and contribute to the ensemble regardless of what we are performing. While I was very clear with setting realistic expectations for his bass playing, George pushed himself and has worked tirelessly to learn the instrument and has become a fully-fledged member of the section.” — Ben Case, Northwood High School

    Alan Xochicale

“Within the school’s performing ensembles, Alan is one of the strongest instrumentalists in the program. He performs tenor saxophone and bass guitar in jazz band, showcasing advanced musicianship, stylistic flexibility, and a deep understanding of both harmonic and rhythmic roles. In concert band, his tenor saxophone sound contributes to the overall sound of the ensemble and his musicianship helps make the notes on the page turn into meaningful and thoughtful performances. Outside of school, Alan continues to expand his instrumental range by performing guitar in his own cover band, demonstrating a commitment to continuous growth and artistic exploration.” — Quinlan Skinner, Buena Park High School
