Shark feasting on a sea lion shuts down Sunset Beach in Huntington Beach
    • April 29, 2026

An estimated 9- to 10-foot great white shark seen feasting on a sea lion carcass off Sunset Beach early Wednesday has prompted lifeguards to shut down the nearby ocean access for 48 hours.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Marine Safety Division reported the shark feeding in the surf line close to shore at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, the city reported on social media.

“The shark was exhibiting aggressive behavior near shore,” officials said. “In addition to the inherent danger posed by a great white shark in the area, the risk increases when they are actively feeding on large food sources.”

The beach will be closed for 48 hours within one mile in each direction of North Pacific Avenue and 12th Street (Sunset Beach Tower 12).

“We ask that all beachgoers check in with lifeguards and follow posted signs during the closure,” officials said.

It’s the second beach closure off Huntington Beach in a week, following a shark showing “aggressive” behavior on  April 22. That shark was spotted after the Vans Jack’s Surfboard Pro contest had ended for the day and shut down the ocean for 24 hours, including the surf competition the next day.

There’s already been a string of shark-related incidents along the Southern California coast this year, with experts calling for a “sharky summer” due to warmer-than-normal waters.
