Magnitude wins Dubai World Cup, denying Forever Young
    • March 28, 2026

The American colt Magnitude went straight to the front from the inside post and led all the way to upset Forever Young in the Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse on Saturday.

Four-year-old Magnitude, ridden by Jose Ortiz for trainer Steve Asmussen, paid $9 after winning his first Group 1 or Grade I race by building on the sharp form he showed in victories at Churchill Downs in Kentucky and Oaklawn Park in Arkansas.

The star Japanese 5-year-old Forever Young and jockey Ryusei Sakai were sent off at 3-5 odds but couldn’t go past Magnitude after tracking the front-runner throughout the 1¼-mile race on dirt, finishing second ahead of the Dubai-based 5-year-old Meydaan in the nine-horse race.

Forever Young was trying to extend his global dominance by adding a Dubai World Cup win to his triumph in last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar and last month’s Saudi Cup in Riyadh.

Magnitude became the 15th U.S.-trained horse to win in the 30 runnings of the Dubai World Cup, joining a list that includes Cigar, Silver Charm, Curlin, Animal Kingdom, California Chrome and Arrogate.

Hit Show and jockey Florent Geroux, the U.S.-based 2025 winners of the $12 million race, never threatened this time.
